I've ended up with 100' of #2 welding leads, except its in four lengths of 25' each.  What I would like to do is have 50' of leads for ground and stinger, and I have been looking at the quick connect couplings.  Only issue is, these couplings are somewhat bulky.  My question is, are there any types of permanent couplings or crimp connectors that are smaller than the quick connects, yet still transfer amperage effectively?
Reply:Me, I'd sooner have 4-25' lengths of lead with a male and female quick connect on each end, that way you could have and combination you want but that's me. Saying that, go to an automaotive or truck supply shop and get some battery lead couplings and some heat shrink....Mike
Reply:Go to your local electrical supply. Tell him the size wire you have and tell him you want some copper split bolts. Very easy to put together. You will need some electrical tape for insulation after you put the wire together. You can get crimps but would need a special tool.
Reply:Any welding supply should have the correct size copper splicing sleeve and the tool to crimp them with. You can dull a cold chisel, lay everything in a piece of angle iron and crimp the sleeve down the middle with the chisel, then hammer it over and the joint is no larger than the lead and the splice won't pull out. Tape it up with electrical tape and then tape a couple or three layers over the electrical tape with friction tape for wear protection. The friction tape will last a long time and when it gets frazzled just peel it off and retape. Heat shrink tubing makes a nicer looking cover but wears quicker than the friction tape.
Reply:Old Timer is right about using the sleeve. I imagine the copper split bolts are kinda pricey right now because of the price of copper. When I used them it was on the company's dime. There advantage is you can put them on with a wrench and use the again if you need too. If the supply house won't let you take the crimper maybe they will do it for you if you take the leads with you. The crimping tool makes a good tight connection that will not come loose, unless you try to pull a car with the lead.
