Need a new career path

Well learned last week that the plant I have worked in for near 25 years is closing in 1 year tops. So at 43 I must choose a near career. Welding started as a job some 25 years ago then went to the plant which is now shutting down. Over the past 6-7 years picked up welding as a hobby again at first. Got more involved as time passed. Not a bad welder but still lots to learn. So I am leaning toward continuing my welding education. Any advice for the old bastard would be appreciated. What is the demand for skilled welders?What avenue of the trade should I concentrate on?I am in Ontario, Canada.Also wish me luck....think Im going to need it.Scott.

Reply:Process's I am familiar with Mig and Arc.\I was a (still am for now) Maintance mech. repair and maintain manufacturing equipment.And I will get money for retraining, pretty good some for my 25 yrs. Just what to do with it.

Reply:Know the feeling!  I worked in shipyards for years with some of the older welder/fitters. I learned alot from them. I moved on to shop work tig welding, sheet metal work. I said to myself I would never go back to the hell hole shipyards, but times are getting worst. Down in south Louisiana it's hot with plenty of humitidy to go with (wit) that (dat). "LOL"They are always hiring,  paying anywhere from $17.00 to $35.00 an hour. I prefer the offshore platform fabrication yards. If you want to make a move and make serious money, put an application @ Offshore specialty INC.But be prepared to work 6/7 days a week 10 to 16 or more hours a day.  Pipe fitters/welders/Tig ect.
