I finally got tired of having to re wrap my lenghts welding cable, every time I would take them off their storage shelf in the shop.  Since they would lay on top of each other they just get tangled up.   After doing this a few dozen time and I got .  So I decided to built a cable rack.  Its 2" by 2: by 1/4" angle with 7/8" pins.  The pins are welded on an angle to keep the cable from slipping off.  It only took 2 hours to punch, weld, paint and hang.I have 1200 feet of 2/0 cable. 800 of it is hanging here along with my welding ground jumper cables, stingers with whips and ground clamps.  The other 400ft,  is on the truck.   After hanging all that cable on the rack, and it got me thinking how much welding cable does everyone else own? Reply:wow.1200 feetthats 600 feet away from the action.how much volt drop would that be?OK i assume you have multiple machinesi also have several machines, but i only use them one at a time.2/0 =200' (2 @ 60', 2 @40')no. 2 = 100' (wips and bits and bobs)i need a rack like you made (but smaller), but i dont have enough wallsOh and a 50' 6/4 220v extention that cost as least as much as the 200' of 2/0G
Reply:I really have no idea what the voltage drop would be.  But I do work in this one building a lot.  Every time I am there, I have to run about 400 feet of cable out to get most of the building from where the welder has to be wired in at. Or 500 ft if I run it off the trucks welder.  At least the ground cable only has to be 10' long.  Lincoln 300 Vantage 2008300 Commander 1999SA250 1999SA200 1968Miller Syncrowave 200XMT350MPA/S-52E/xr-15Xtreme 12vs Millermatic 251 w/30A  Millermatic 251 Dialarc 250 Hypertherm 1250 GEKA & Bantom Ironwokers
Reply:You have quite the supply of leads there!  I hope that wall is very strong, that has to be alot of weight!I keep about 100'  of stick leads in the shop and about 300' on the truck, most of it 2/0, plus stinger and work cable whips.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:Originally Posted by 6010We had the same problem where I worked. We had some digesters that needed weld repairs a lot. We ran some conduit and pulled some welding cable with taps at each floor. It paid for itself in no time because the night shift didn't need a crane when they had peoblems on the top floors and had a sleleton crew. Where time equals money, it doesn't take very long for something like this to pay for itself.
