I have a lincoln AC/DC 225 mig welder (buzz box) Can anyone tell me if power can be supplied by a gas generator? I have a 5800 watt generator w/220 outlet. I havent tried it yet with welder was just curious if anyone knew for sure this would be a good idea. Thanks
Reply:I think what you have there is a stick welder not a mig welder. You can power it with a generator but it may take alot more power than your generator puts out, depending on the input current requirements of your machine.Volts x Amps = Watts. For example, if your machine requires 50 amps of 240 volt power, then 12 Kilowatts generator power is needed to supply it.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Thanks...Yeah sounds like Ill need a bigger generator. workshop doesnt have 220 and its about 300' from service box. To be able to provide 220 that kind of distance is spendy figured might be cheaper to go the route of a generator.
Reply:You're better off finding a nice used generator/welder on CL. Several guy's have found some sweet deals on older AC machines that needed some TLC. Some nice DC machines show up from time to time also if you keep your eyes open..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:How many threads are devoted to this subject???????????Let me count the ways..........ANYBODY EVEN KNOW HOW TO DO MATH THESE DAYS?????Amps times volts equals watts. Holy chit!!!!!"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Thats why they call a forum...Duh. To gain knowledge from those with experience you dont need math to figure that out. But maybe you do let me help its called 2+2=simple instead of knocking people why dont you try acting like what your name says ...master welder. I dont claim to be a expert welder but by trade I am a 20 year welding inspector. If I had a nickel for how many guys claim the title master welder.....I would be poor. Because a real welder is smart enough to know the entire scope of welding is a vast subject to know it all is rare. But if you want to know it all it starts by asking questions...maybe next time instead of insults try answers works much better.

Reply:DCR,Farmersamm is a good guy, I've learned a lot from reading his posts. I don't think he claims to be a master welder.. Those tags are put under your name based on how many posts you have made. People just appreciate when others search the forums first, then ask questions when they need more clarification or they couldn't find what they were looking for. This keeps people from having to re-answer questions over and over. Reply:Thanks for your input...I am knowledgable in what welding reqiurements need to be...Not so much with power reqiurements. I basically measure and interpret codes....welding inspection is much different than welding itself. I have a 140c lincoln wire feed and use it to light fab work some specialty jigs, truck bumpers that sort of thing but I do not earn a living by welding. I know enough to do what I do just I lack knowledge of the finer points. Besides I'm a firm believer there are no stupid questions....after I posted original question I realized I didnt word it right. Farmersamm does claim master welder I just get a little bent out of shape when people would rather knock someone instead of help them. To read all the technical manuals concerning welding will still make no sense till someone explains it on a actual level the average idiot such as myself can understand. Thanks again
