How do you get mill scale off of round stock

I've got about 100 feet of 5/8" rod and I want the mill scale off.  I have a Chinese commie ******* flap wheel which works great on flats etc. I just did 30 feet of 3 inch round pipe w/ 24 grit which took a long time.is there a better way other than hire an illegal alien to do it.A true democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what's for lunch.

Reply:I use the wire cup method and you want to wear gloves!I always end up with several wire pieces embedded in various parts of my body as well! A face shield is also a good idea!Can't someone come up with a liquid scale remover? Acetone does NOT work!
Reply:Muriatic acid works fine if you can submerse it in the solution.  I make a lot of stuff less than 5 feet long so can put the product in and clean scale that way.Get it hot and hit it hard...

Reply:The slickest and easiest way  I ever saw save for blasting is grinding with a roller set. use a pair of roller guides ( just a Y with a roller on each upper leg) and set the round item in them, they are held on two sawhorses set apart by about 2/3 the length of the round item. use the hand grinder with a flapwheel or a 36-60  disc and let the item turn in the rollers using the force created by the cutting wheel. angle the arc of the cut across the piece to vary the force turning the item in the roller, use more lengthwise arc to keep it slow- more across to speed it up. you can just start at one end and move right along it. keep in mind that the part can walk right out of the rollers lengthwise if you let it - reverse directions every now and then to keep it between the rollers. this gives a nice surface finish that looks like it was ground, if you are skillful with the grinder and using a fine enough grit.The last time I saw this method used the guy was using one wye giude and one flat roller like would be used for a bandsaw or tablesaw work support, still worked just fine but he put a stop on the flat roller so it wouldnt walk off the edge.
Reply:Another tool that is helpful for this is a pipe threading machine. Just need the drive portion. For a lot of material, a few bucks at  a junkyard is worth it.Another thing that helps is to let the material rust a little. Lifts the scale off.
Reply:I was thinking about making some kind of device with three shafts in a triangular afair then using say a #40 chain to make the all turn at once and maybe use 3 6" or 8" wire wheels aligned so I could drag the piece through them where their circumferences intersected?  But also sometimes I have a real problem removing ALL mill scale from a piece of steel....and even when I sandblast it I have to work it kind of hard to get ALL of the mill scale off.
Reply:go with the muriatic acid, its the cheapest, easiest, and quickest. but do yourself a favor and make sure you are outside and you will still probably want a resperator. muriatic acid can be bought from home depot for like 2 gallons for $3. or there is another way, it takes a little longer but make actually be cheaper...dont pay the wetback. but do make sure to give him a ride HOME!!
Reply:the slickest way is to take a length of pipe and cap one end and the other a door. Build a set of rollers, and a drive system. put a couple bags of sand in the pipe, and load your material. Tumble clean. the pieces just rub together with the abrasive.Keep your stick on the ice
