I got a rusted gas tank that has holes through it.What would be the best way to patch these holes up?I got a mig welder and have oxy ace capabilities.
Reply:Go buy a new tank.
Reply:Go buy a new tank.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:Go buy a new tank. POR 15
Reply:Don't know if anybody has said this yet but.....Go buy a new tank.My name's not Jim....
Reply:Go buy a new tank.Or chew some bubble gum, then stick it in the holes.should do the trick if you're short on cash.
Reply:I'm wondering if maybe  Pyroracing85 is working with a less than common tank, that could justify a rebuild.Rusted tanks can be welded, soldered, and sealed, but it's not practical on easily replaced tanks. What kind of tank Pyro?Last edited by denrep; 10-15-2009 at 11:42 PM.
Reply:the normal problem with fixing a tank like you're describing is that the metal is usually so far gone that just prepping it for welding will cause it to disintegrate.  This normally leads to a patch that about 10x larger than what you had planned on doing.  So its usually better to just buy a new one,  if its commercially available.
Reply:hit old tank with 8 pound hammer, then go buy new tank
Reply:Buy a new tank, cut the old one in half and wrap around new tank to fool the folks who don't think you need a new tank....if they exist?
Reply:Two words, Scrap Metal ,then buy a new tank .safety last
Reply:Seeing that nobody else has thought of it or mentioned it yet, BUY A NEW TANKI am what I am, Deal with it!If necessity is the Mother of Invention, I must be the Father of Desperation!
Reply:Wow,   All you guys that say to buy a new tank must be spoiled. Seemingly nothing I work on has parts available for it. In the restoration field its common to repair, or fabricate a new tank identical to the original.
Reply:when the OP said he HAS a RUSTED tank  "with holes" it could a never ending repair, one holes turns into a bigger holeor it may have a hundred small holes ( we don't knowit would have been better had he shown pics or explained betterbut if it has  RUST i would be thinking ....rust bad deal, fix one and  leaks again so im with the the others. look for new  or good used  some things just are not worth taking time to try to repairthat and the chance of  *BOOM *   ,it only takes one time for things to go wrong  AND YES I HAVE REPAIRED A FEW TANKS IN MY DAYbut look for the better  fix on old stuff

Reply:Send it to somebody else who can do it. I used their service a few years back, they do excellent work.City of L.A. Reply:It is an old antique gas tank.It is for a friend. I thought he just wanted a simple weld but after grinding it found out it holes with some kind of filler in it..

Not trying to flame him, just don't believe he has the experience to perform the necessary repairs safely.

Reply:One of the more popular ones here in Canada, don't know if it's available stateside or not:http://www.nlsproducts.ca/techsteel/tech_steel_e.htmlI believe JB Weld makes a putty too.... Originally Posted by prop-doctorcheck or call you local parts store dont remember the name they will carry it
Reply:I repaired a filler neck that was broken at the bottom (solder joint) with ordinary 5-minute epoxy from the grocery store, it lasted longer than I owned the car - 15+ years, all the while supporting the whole weight of the hose and nozzle when filling.  I'm inclined to think that JB Weld brand epoxy would effect a permanent repair.  Epoxies are usually represented to be resistant to petroleum solvents.  GOOD LUCK!There is a rubber compound you can purchase that can be poured into a dry tank and sloshed around to forma  sort of "liner." This is used on antique stuff all the time.Check out:http://www.jcwhitney.com/LIQUID_FUEL...;N;2000795;0;0Arclight Originally Posted by hollowstateI repaired a filler neck that was broken at the bottom (solder joint) with ordinary 5-minute epoxy from the grocery store, it lasted longer than I owned the car - 15+ years, all the while supporting the whole weight of the hose and nozzle when filling.  I'm inclined to think that JB Weld brand epoxy would effect a permanent repair.  Epoxies are usually represented to be resistant to petroleum solvents.  GOOD LUCK!
