Do barrel hinges have some kind of mechanism for keeping people from lifting a gate off the hinges to gain access?I'm thinking of using this type of hinge on a driveway gate:http://www.hardwaresource.com/Store_...t=167&OrderID=
Reply:Just install the bottom one with the pin facing up and the top one with the pin facing down.Brett
Reply:That's what I've seen done on walk thru gates.  So does that mean I have to prop the gate up while welding the top hinge onto the post?  Sounds challenging but do-able.  I'm trying to think if I would ever want to remove the gate once its installed.  I guess not.....
Reply:You could always weld stud to the post on the top. Thats how most gates I've seen are attached. Use a floor jack at the end to hold the gate up and clamp some extra pieces to the gate to keep it from tipping over.Brett
Reply:Turn the hinges into brackets.  They can be bolted into place.  This will detur (sp?) people from trying to get in.  Face it, if they REALLY want in, they are going to get in.We did this all the time with cattle gates on the dairy farm I was raised on, this way the cattle could not knock the gates off the posts.

Reply:I hear ya on the fact that someone will get in if they REALLY want to get in.  I just didn't want to do something that looked like an invitation to try.  But maybe your average no-gooder isn't as smart as a cow.   I'm liking the idea of welding on something that will interfere with the hinge being slid apart.  With the big barrel hinges it will probably need to be bigger than a washer.  Maybe tack weld it on so I can use a cutting disk to get it off if needed.  Thanks for all of the ideas to chew on.
Reply:CHEW ON ? ? ?Now that was funny)

Reply:That sounds like the right way to do the gate. I veiwed your web page and I can tell you have a clue!!! I don't build or hang gates for a job, but I may in the future. I just posted what I saw the "profesionals" do. Harvey keep up the great web site and projects.Brett
Reply:Hey Harv, I guess it's true that they really do things BIG in Texas.  What an amazing gate/fence.  Nice job. Fun reading, too.So let me see if I understand you on the barrel hinges.  The zert fitting are always facing up.  Lower pin (facing up) goes on the post, upper pin (also facing up) goes on the gate.  I inlcuded a link to what I think you are referring to for the steel/brass type.  http://www.guden.com/display-wh2.aspHave you used this type before?  I found a spec sheet for this hinge that showed that the pointed-V edge (top view) of this hinge is held against the post or gate and then a weld bead is run down either side. Does that sound right?  Also, do you still use a little lube on the pin before you install it?
Reply:That's the hinge willy.  I don't lube them.  But I'm sure a little silicone spray or WD 40 wouldn't hurt.Bigger is better for gates.  But those little puppies are handier'n a pocket on pants for all kinds of tricks. They also come in stainless with the brass pin.  I've used the little ones with a strap attached to make one eighty degree hinges for cabinets.  One of the things I do is build cabinets into fences.  It's out of sight storage and with a little creative thinking and the stainless it's maintenance free good stuff for the long haul. They also work great for tool boxes, bar b que grills, etc and so on.One of the weaknesses of steel on steel is rust up.  So a fella goes through three kinds of hades making a beautiful hinge for say a smoker.  Then it sets over winter and come spring out comes the smoker.  After much hammering and more bad words than good ones the hinges are  replaced.  It happens all the time.Stainless and brass are expensive.  But they're cheap when you consider that maybe the mother of the woman you want more than life itself will never forgive the language you used on that frozen up hinge.  Almost as bad as having the reverend overhear it and then it costs ten prices in the passed plate for weeks on end to get rid of his over the glasses and down the nose look. The one downside for  those hinges is the lack of adjustment at a later date if the gate sags or more likely, the post moves.life is good
Reply:I think they sell these hinges at the local welding store.  I'll check them out. Thanks.
