I have gotten sum relly nasty burns.  I take it as part of my job as a pro.  Every one has a story.  Id like to open this up and ask for you all to share your storys here.
Reply:worst burn was from a piece of aluminum i had just ground with a 4 1/2" angle grinder. the heat traveled through the piece. i picked it up on the other side from where i was grinding and heard my hand sizzle.if it was steel i would have been okay.
Reply:Seems like every time I turn my welder on, I wind up with a new burn or two.  I have a series of them now.  Some scabbing over, some white, some still red.
Reply:The worst burns I got were all when I was doing production aluminum welding.  You can't see when its hot and don't realize it untill after you already got your it in your hand.   Worst one was when I had just finished one corner weld of a square frame, was flipping the frame on the jig and grabbing the next piece off the cart at the same time, somehow flipped it wrong and ended up grabbing the corner I had just welded 2 seconds earlier.  I grabbed it with my torch hand, which I cut the fingers out of the glove on. Got a nice stripe of melted skin accross my fingers.  The scar lasted for a couple years.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:100's of little ones, no big ones from welding. Strangest place for a burn would have to be the one I got on my achilles heel.Tough as nails and damn near as smart
Reply:Since I was the guy taking Ornamental Iron Work at school, I was helping an idiot bend pipe for a bumper he wanted to make.  Filled with sand, capped, heated, bent, etc.  Told said retard to let it cool a while.  As I came through the door about 3 minutes later said retard was pounding the cap, he tried to cut off with a torch, off the pipe with a hammer and setting loose a torrent of steam and scalding hot sand.  Aimed directly at me.  Nice burns on my right arm and stomach/chest area.  Thankfully I still had my safety gear on so the burns were not terribly bad.  The lump on his head lasted a few days longer than the burns.
Reply:I haven't been welding that long, so only minor burns here and there, mostly not paying attention.years ago, when i was a a kid, my family owned a glass factory.  it was pretty decent sized factory, 175-250 workers depends on economy.  I started operating the mold (for glass blowers) since i was 3 and a half.  the trick is to keep the mold shut-hard while the guys are blowing the glass.  Not being the brightest kid in town, i could only count to 3 (i was 3 yr old), but i was told to pour 5 cups of water between each guy.  the handle got really hot after a while, and i burnt my hands up pretty good.i learn how to count to 5 that day.
Reply:Under the front end of a tandem truck cutting off a cylinder that tipped the plow front. Lit the torch and hit the trigger which promptly blew a piece of slag the size of a basketball (not really but it felt that big) into my right ear hole. The sound of burning eardrum up close was nothing compared to the pain. Imagine someone poking a hot rod into your eardrum a bunch of times.Have a hearing aid now for that side and if I go swimming I have to make sure I wear an earplug to keep the water out or I'll sink . Not really but if I don't I can be guaranteed an ear infection. Same if I'm outside in the winter I either have t make sure my hat's over that side or use a plug.So when someone tells you to wear earplugs, use 'em. it's not just for soundAnother that happened to a friend of mine. He always left his boots opened at the top...always. Making a 1 1/4" pipe railing he was cutting out the copes for the mid rail with a torch. The fingernail shaped piece fell off and promptly went into his boot where it proceeded to burn it's way into his ankle bone, you know, the piece that sticks out. He was off for a month or so with that, Ended up having to get skin grafts.....Mike
Reply:I was doing some aluminum tig welding and had to have the tungsten sticking out about a 5/8" from the end of the cup to access the weld.  I had just finished a weld and laid the torch over my leg like I always did, the torch slipped and that red hot tungsten went right into my inner thigh and burnt a HOLE in me.At Hobart, the third day I was welding I was doing oxy-acetylene welding and had a back fire and the blob of molten metal  flew out and landed on my sack.  After that I was seriously questioning why I wanted to be a welder…
Reply:Many years ago while I was doing heavy fab ( At this stage I had only been welding for 2 years)   I had to do sum tricky over head stick welding.  I had next to no room as well.  I had a bit blob out and land on me.  Lets just say I could smell sausages.  I learnt a very important lesson that day.  Only were cotton don’t wear polyester.
