Below is a pretty simple railing I made for my Dad's wheelchair ramp.  Now that I have him sold on the idea, I want to finish the rest of the ramp.  This one is a bit different from what I have planned for the rest.  The middle rail on this is 1/8" x 2" plate and the remainder is 1" 14 ga square tube.  The mount is 1 1/4" 14 ga on 1/8" plate.  The railing can be lifted out of the mounts pretty easily, although it is a tight fit.  I took a die grinder to knock the weld down on the inside of the 1 1/4" tube.  The 1" tube was notched on each side a 1/2" with the angle grinder and the ends bent in a bit with the hammer.  I then welded the gap remaining and ground them to a smooth taper to make it easy to start it into the mount. The rest of the railing will not be removable.   This piece was removable in the event that something needs to be moved in/out of the kitchen.  The remainder will use 1" sq.  tube for the middle rail instead of the 1/8" bar.My question is this - I've seen software for sale that is used to design railings.  Has anyone used any of these tools and what is your opinion?  I'm looking at it primarily to validate materials lists, dimensions, and angles. Thanks,Eric Attached Images
Reply:If you are thinking of going into business making stairs, railings, etc.. then I guess software could help but I know many fabricators who do without, me being one of them.  If this is a one time thing why bother spending that kind of money on software, it's not cheap and you can probably get someone to design it for you for less than what the software's worth. Thats just my two cents to a post that has no replies .Btw nice looking railing, I like he idea of making it removable.
Reply:Plasma,Thanks for the reply.  It's not a business - I'm best described as a hobby welder - just something to help out my ole' man.   The removable part works at that door incase he needs to get a new fridge or the like.  I need to get the rest finished as I worry daily about him taking a dive off the ramp.Eric
Reply:IMHO I think you will gain more experience using your head and not letting software do the work for you.  It's more rewarding in the end to.
