I've got an almost-new (40 engine hrs) Bluestar 180 that won't run a 110 mig well at all, trying to guess why. Plugged into house power I get nice beads on .120 pipe, but on the Bluestar it can't do it, acts like it's 20% less punch. Looking at the manual, I noticed much to my surprise that the AC output is 50 Hz rather than 60...would that do it?Current jobs require being able to run a mig, both 110 and 220.Thinking of replacing it with a Trail Power- there are a couple for sale in my area, both diesels, one doesn't even have 220, not sure about the other. Is there a quick and dirty way to wire it for 220 50A, or are you stuck with what's on there?The other thing is that one of them (strong runner, so says the ad) has 6k engine hours- is that a lot for the Duetz (?) engine?Thanks for any ideas!Andy G.Anacortes WA
Reply:What's a Trail Power?The Bluestar 180E makes 4000 watts 34 amps of 120v power at 60Hz. It should be able to power a small 110v mig to weld up to 1/8" material. My Generac 4000XL powers my Millermatic 175 on 220v and it welds 1/8" fine. Reply:The Trail Power welders are both diesel trailer mounted units made by miller sometime in the past, 250A
Reply:Trailblazer . Probly 44D's. They didn't have much aux genny power, but had plenty of arc power and CC/CV output. If you get one of those, you can run a wire feeder off the cv weld output and have all the mig welding power you want.
