Until I get power to my garage I was planning on running my 225 buzzbox off my 5k generator, anyone done this? I know I won't be able to run it wide open but I'm only plannig on using 1/8 or maybe 5/32 7018 or possably 1/8 jets. I thought this was asked before but be dam**d if i can find anthing.....Mike

Reply:It's been talked about several times actually. I vaugely remember someone trying it last year, but only managed it at very low amps. I want to say he might have ran 1/16" or 3/32" rod at best and the welds looked way cold.You really need a 12kw or bigger gen set to utilize that machine. Miller rates their 10KW engindrive generators at 40 or 42amp 220v aux power.Also most 5KW generators are 5KW surge and only like 4KW or 4.2KW cont. Make sure if you want to use a generator you are actually looking at the cont rating not the surge..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:You need at least a 10,000 kw generator to make it work, anything less and you will barely strike an arc. Reply:No way you're going to be able to run 5/32 7024 from that small generator with a power hungry buzz box. With 6011 or 6013, probly 1/16 or 3/32, maybe 1/8. Reply:Were all in agreement, that you need a generator that will not only supply power for the continuous load but also the surge at start-up. 12 to 15 Kw generators will have 15 to 20 hp motors, thats going to be $$$$.
Reply:Your better off selling them both and buying a used ranger or bobcat from your local craigslist. Sorry, I tried it once with an ac225 and troy-bilt 5500 and would not even burn a 3/32 7018 half way without tripping.

Reply:I was thinking of one of those units. I used one over a year ago expecting it to be a piece of crap but for the size of it I was very impressed.I'd still rather get a gas portable and turf the genset, one less engine to service and it wouldn't be setting around as long not going. The poor generator I bought years ago after hurricane Juan hit in 2003 has maybe at the most 5 hours on it. The ex, wife at the time, kept whining that we didn't need it so needless to say I was praying for a power outage but alas it never came so I turfed the wife ....Mike
