Made these three projects for gifts. An earlier version of the heron I posted before -- I'm getting better as I go along. On this one all the cat tails and leaves are buffed and then heat colored. The Dragon Fly is "yard art". It is on 3/16" wire with 1/4" "h" at bottom to stick in ground. Copper color spray paint for the finish. The fish I finished this morning (Dad's B-day in February). Similar to heron with various size strap to look like sea grass. The copper color fish are steel, using an extremely easy copper plating process from Metal Finishes Plus. The stripes were put on using there "rainbow torch" product and a cue tip. You can find their web site by just putting their name all together and adding .com.Bob Attached Images

Reply:Some folks have an eye for the art trying to get out of a piece of metal. To me, everything metal looks like good ingredients for a hay rack or a utility trailer. Again...good job, justlearning. I think soon you should change your handle to justteaching.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.

Reply:JustLearninImpressive work You do have the right Idea about moving the puddle to the wire in order to get them to weld. Also, Muratic acid will clean the mill scale off. I use it 1:20. Keep it covered when not in use. I have heard that Snobol toilet cleaner works also. Cutting, don't know what you are using, though I have used a jigsaw with metal cutting blade. Wear a face sheild and glasses and coat because my saw throws large metal pieces up. A good quality cutting wheel on your angle grinder also works. If your metal isn't too thick then you can find some cheap electric shears. There are also bench shears that might help.Keep the pictures coming, Thanks |
