Hi, I'm looking to weld stainless steel, specifically for cooking and kitchen applications. I want to start small since I need to practice first, and more practice. I was looking at the small migs from LE that they have in Home Depot. Any suggestions and help will be appreciated.
Reply:To me that says a small DC inverter tig rather than mig. Most of the guys I am familiar with that are doing work on food product Stainless are using tig and back gassing to avoid the sugaring on the back that can collect bacteria and so on..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:Thanks for the quick reply DSW. What TIG welder would you suggest I start with, I haven't tiged around 10 years or so. I'll be practicing until I can have a bead I can be proud of.
Reply:Miller maxstar is a good place to start. Hobarts are also the same machine made by miller still, with brown paint instead.
Reply:Yep, Maxstar 150 STH would be my weapon of choice for that application. My name's not Jim....

Reply:I love my little hobart 150sti.....first machine I ever bought. The stuff I`ve welded with that thing on the worst power imaginable is ridiculous. From stainless stuff in restaurants. Food tooling for manufacturing lines, to car frames and thicker stuff with stick...it still amazes me everytime. Now if you give it 20amps that little box will really melt some serious stuff.
Reply:dr33 has a lot of experience and knowledge and would not stear you wrong
