ive been welding mostly with 7018 rods uphill down hill sideways  it looks really goodpicked up some 6010 rods today just couldnt get them to look goodthan picked up some 7024 rods wow those rods flow  but just not vertical wellim an inspiring welder going thorough welding school in a month do i really need any other rods than 7024 and 7018?what is the difference in these rods?can anyone point me to reading about all rods big and small?thanks
Reply:6010 is generally used for a root pass, applied with a whipping motion.    It penetrates well and can cut through rust and paint (not that any of us would ever fail to prep the surface of the metal joint ).   The 6010 root pass is usually capped with a 7018.    A 6010 weld will not be as smooth as a 7018 weld, because it freezes faster and has less flux.   6010 welds may be brittle, too, depending on how slowly it cooled.    I use 6010/6011 for root passes, for tacking, and for sheet metal.7018 is the go-to rod for a strong weld on anything thicker than sheet metal.    It is tougher and looks better than 6010/6011.   The 7018 weld is usually preceded with a 6010/6011 root pass, though.I haven't used 7024 but I don't think it is an all-position rod.    A maintenance manager at a plant where I once worked had a policy that we were only allowed to use 6011 and 7018 rods (excepting for stainless).   He said anything that needed to be done in his plant could be done with those two rods, and I can't disagree with him.   I've sinced played around with 6013 and 6010 but at the end of the day it's hard to beat 6011 and 7018.As for reading material, anything by Lincoln is good.
Reply:6010 requires practice to look good because of the extra electrode manipulation you have to do. I would still recommend you learn how to use it because it can do things that 7018 can't (patch holes, root passes, blasting through rust/paint/dirt...)for 7024, the "2" implies that it's only for use in the flat and horizontal positions.... that is, horizontal fillet, which is still kinda flat (gravity isn't dramatically grabbing at the puddle.)The puddle is really fluid, don't even think about vertical or overhead (yikes).Keeping it down in the hood...literally!

Reply:Go to a welding supply and get a welders handbook(pocket ref.). the two main welding rods you will ever use is 5p(6010) and lo-hi(7018)..get good enuf with those and you can pick up another type of rod and run it.Air vantage 500 on the 08' KWharris torchesl25 pro suitcasecomletely restored 1969 SA200 redfaceon my 08' duramaxPIMPN AINT EASY
Reply:7018 has its drawbacks in terms of needs to be kept dry=hot.if it aint kept dry, it can cause porosity inthe weld.  if you dont need to use 7018 per some procedure, you might be better off with 7014..same strength, similar bead..no oven required,.
Reply:The h4r line of rod is water resistant and doesnt HAVE to be in an ovenAir vantage 500 on the 08' KWharris torchesl25 pro suitcasecomletely restored 1969 SA200 redfaceon my 08' duramaxPIMPN AINT EASY
