I'd like to find or build a tool that I can do repeatable bends in 1/2" x 4 strap. What I'm building is a 3 point tractor attachment and need to be able to make symetrical bends. So far, I've used the vise and torch, but that's not very practical or repeatable.I've though about making a break gizmo to fit on a hand press, but think there'd be to much slop in it. And I've looked at pipe benders to see if that could be adapted, but not sure........Can't afford a brake. Any clues? THKS.Ron
Reply:I would keep using the torch. However, instead of clamping it into the vise and trying to eyeball it each time, I would make a template from a piece of steel and weld it to a table. Then I would tack the 1/2 strap to the table and bend it to the template. That would at least keep them identical.
Reply:Thats a good idea wicrules. You would definatly need heat still to make your bends no matter the contraption you came with, unless you utilized hydraulics?
Reply:A hossfeld bender will do this, cold, no problem. You gotta bolt it down to the floor, and use the extension handles, but it will have adjustable stops for degree of bend, and how far you insert the flat bar before bending it. About $800, brand new, from either Hossfeld or American Bender. (the patents have expired, so American can make a clone legally. Totally interchangeable)A hossfeld bender is a real tool, made in america, and will outlast you. It will bend flat, round, square, pipe, and, with optional dies, just about anything else.http://www.hossfeldbender.com/http://www.americanbender.com/ |
