At my job I do all of the tig welding between 5 of us at my dads fabracating and repair shop, so I'm constantly switching material and thickness. So of course that means a wide veriety of filler rod, and consumables. Which leads to a mess of 1/2 used ,mixed , and dirty rods, collets,... So "take the time to put it away!"  I usually try but we are extreemly busy, and if even if  I had time the rod "boxes" that they come in provide little protection from carbon arc goudging and Mig sparks. I have a couple of ideas for a couple of boxes that near as I can explain looks like a narrow flat tackle box.About3'Lx6"H,and1 or2'(example dimensions) wide. with a top draw for consumables and bottom draw for rods . I would like to make it myself but i would really like some ideas, comments , blueprints, information of places to look for something like that, because from my experience the more input on something the better it turns out.Last edited by bapnbird; 03-24-2006 at 07:50 AM.Reason: Bad title
Reply:I don't weld in the volumne you are talking about but my first thought is where is the trash can.    Really is there that much advantage to keeping 1/2 used or less welding rods around.   Mixed and dirty rods can be even a bigger problem as they will directly affect the quality of your work.   So get ride of this stuff.    If it ends up costing you to much mooeny then your work habits need honing. As far as storage of materials, Vidmar type cabinets can be wonderfull.   Not cheap nad not really movable.    The comprimise is the smaller units designed to function as roll around super tool boxes.      With the right selection of drawers you should be able to store most of you bulk supplied rods and end up with one of two thing drawers for unused or partials.    This however own't deal with the need to keep your rods dry unless you also come up with air tight boxes to throw the new rods in.So for your tackle box idea my thought is that if it isn't air tight it won't do alot of good.    That of course depends on the rod and your working environment.ThanksDave
