Howdy Ya'll....Finally had my twin sons at home with me fer their summer break and decided to teach them how to weld and use a cutting torch. Every body here is always sayin how much they like pictures so I thought I'd share a few. It was a very proud moment fer me when they both could strike an arc without stickin the rod  ...lol. They have takin to welding like a duck to water....now all they want to do is burn rod all day...I think I have created 2 teenage welding monsters..lol. I'm so glad that they love welding...seems to run in my family. I let them practice building a simple cart and showed them how to run 6013 since its the easiest to use. Now before ya go tearin up the pics let me assure you there is a fire extinguisher handy...just not visible in the pics and I've taught them both proper welding safety....even had them wearin leathers even though it was 95 degrees in the garage  Well I hope ya'll like the pics.Rod Attached Images"Failure is not an option"

Reply:Yeah, CLEAN!  Must be some sort of navy thing and cleanliness, tight ship and all.  looks like you have more hands for projects now.  But, keep those guys busy.  My dad used to say that "when you get a new hammer, everything starts looking like a nail."  With their new-found skill they might start sticking all sorts of stuff together.  I know I did.  Have fun.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:Rod, gotta say you the proud papa.  Im really happy for you.  Welding is such a great skill.  Even if both boys never weld for a job a day in their life its something they can always fall back to and pick up.  In this world of uncertainty its a nice thought that youve got a skill to fall back on.   Boys look sharp in them leathers.  Which weld hood do you use, the old fashion one or the elec or the one you used in the pic,  looks kinda new age, sorta.   ok  i personally use an old a.s.s. jackson works good though.chris

Reply:I used a jackson auto that looks like the shadow big lenz type.  It worked good on most stuff.  Once in a while though the sensors can pickup cause your too far from the arc and its kinda harey  I liked it though, but after its all said and done I prefer my ole trusty.  Well gotta run yall CHRIS
Reply:Man I sure wish my old man coulda showed me how to weld....I had to go and teach myself...oh well at least im doin it (kinda)
Reply:Yeah, me too, infact it might have kept me from being "one of those troubled teens".
Reply:Two fine looking guys you have there.... did they finsh the project?

Reply:thanks for the advice i will try that. what amps do you reckon for 2.5 mm rods?
Reply:2.5mm = 3/32 in = need to know what rod?IF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:what amps do you reccomend with 2.5mm rods?
Reply:Hey guys! Boy you made me feel like a loser of a father. I have been teaching my son the basics of TIG, but I didn't get any pictures. I will have to get some and post them as well. He is only 8 years old, but can manipulate the puddle on some aluminun I was working on. I want him to get really comfortable with that before trying to use a filler rod to lay down a practice bead. But I am glad that I am not the only one passing the skills on to the next gen.
Reply:cheese what type of rod...  6011, 6013, 7018????IF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:they are 6013.p.s. what does like 6013 mean?
Reply:its an aws designation. This tells you about tesile strenth, flux coating which tells you the polarity and other characterisics like to drag or not to drag, and positions, ie vert, flat, overhead, horizontalWith this rod recommends 40-90 amps.  Therefore the mid of 65amps is a good place to start.  For future reference this is the miller site.  They have this weld parameters calculator.  ITs really handy.  Not end all be all.   But is handy and free.   http://www.millerwelds.com/education...calculator.phpIF it Catches...Let it Burn

Reply:teach them all you  can . fine  job!!my welder is 240v input so is it still the same?

Reply:could you walk me through right angle stick welds if it isnt a hassle?
Reply:sure,    the angle for me is a tough one cause i cant see my hand.  However,  id say if you start at 90 or rod perpendicular to plate the move yoiyur hand forward approx 15° that is about right.  this is for flatpos,  but its the same general everything but vert.  going up you aim rod up.   going down you also aim rod up.  6013 drag it.  by this i mean keep rod in contact with the plate while you are welding.  you can long arc a little to get puddle going...then go for contact.IF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:sorta see what you mean but i only need to know how to do rightangle
Reply:you talkin t joints..aka fillet?IF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:do same thing,  except aim rod to the middle of V even spaced, then raise your hand and aim a tad more to the bottom plate...this what you mean?IF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:i think so and i dont know what diferent types of welds are called
Reply:well if you put two pieces of plate togther and its flat,  its called butt weld.   A butt weld could be flat pos, horizontal, vertical, or overhead meaning upside down.  when you over lap them, common for brazed welds and on thinner stuff, its a lap joint.  If you make a T or a 90° angle with it thats a t joint, or a fillet weld  hope this helps.  ill try to dig up pictures latrerIF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:it does help thanks
