After seeing a homemade ring bender in this forum, I thought I needed one.Checked out some pics on the internet and came up with my own design using a two ton jack and some leftover pieces from the "metal corner" of my shop. The top roller/handle comes off easily to remove the finished piece. Attached Images
Reply:Maybe a little rough around the edges but it looks like it works ok. How about some pics of the rings?
Reply:different dies for differnt sizes...rool em up a dozen at a time
Reply:took me another try to post pics Attached Images
Reply:I like that. Simple and effective for the occasional user. I have been hesitant to buy pillow blocks, big diameter rod/shafts, gears, etc. I like the simplicity of locking in the top wheel too.Do you have any trouble with it slipping on the material? What's the thickest you have tried?Hobbiest hack
Reply:If I bend the material a little at a time, I have no trouble with the material slipping at all. Usually a half a stroke on the pump handle each time I run the material through works very well although it takes awhile to complete the bend. So far the thickest material I have bent is 3/8 round rod. I'll try to post some pics of the bends later.
Reply:Thanks for the info. new question. Do you think it would bend 5/8" solid round? I have a need to make some 14"+ diameter rings out of 5/8".
Reply:If I moved the bottom wheels apart (they adjust) I think it would probably do it. The jack certainly has the capacity and I made it to take material up to 1".

Reply:sorry for asking this. i'm wondering what did the jack push? the two roller? can i get some more pic?
Reply:awesome project manhome made **** that works always impresses
Reply:Well done!
Reply:I'd like to see a video of someone using a homemade bender. I'm thinking of making my own as well, but I have to see one in use to understand the concept.

Reply:Redrmmk is right, the jack pushes against the bottom of the frame, pulling the top wheel down. I think this set up makes it easier to remove the material once it's done. Just release (lower) the jack, lift up on the cage that holds the jack and remove the top wheel/handle to remove the finished ring.Andreas |
