Hi Guys,I just found this forum and looks like a lot of welding knowledge here. I've been welding for 25 years now and have had some people ask me about teaching them how to weld. I have been certified for different jobs over the years and am familiar with all types of welding. My question is do any of you out there teach new welders and get paid for it. I'm not talking about teaching in schools although I wouldn't mind hearing any opinions from that side, I want to know if guys are teaching at home shops. I just thought that I have the knowledge and experience, why don't I use it to teach this craft to new welders willing to learn. Any and all opinions appreciated.Wade FreitasCopper [email protected]
Reply:I've trained people at work. I've also had a couple friends and family members ask to learn, though none have been willing to commit to any time yet. I've been thinking of offering lessons in the paper or on craig's list.
Reply:I have to drop in my .02 cents here. I have gone to school over the years and honed my skills. I have just recently gotten more serious about getting my certs. I have to say that I have taught a couple of people to weld at work, never to much in detail, but just the basics so they were able to do it. when my boss found out I was going to school to get certified I'm pretty sure he knew I was doing so to eventually get a better job, so he quit having me do the welding at work and had the guy who I kinda taught do it all, for more reasons then one I am sure, which I won't bore you with. since then I have obtained a couple of certs and my helper who I taught got fired, so now I'm back doing the welding, I have just inquired about a raise, I didn't flat out ask for one but I asked what more could I do to possibly warrant a raise in the future, and the response was not anything good. with the way the economy is I am kind of stuck for now. my main gripe is I have done a ton of welding for a pretty minimal wage. I have taught a couple of people there who have done a ton of welding which they were probably making min wage, after all of the years I have been there and the numerous ways I have saved them money when I ask about a little raise due to my certs and no good in the ways of a raise come of it. I can tell you after all of my time going to school, spending my money on books, classes and certs, I won't ever teach anyone unless I am compensated to do so
Reply:I totally agree, I had a guy that was fresh out of jail come to me and begged me to hire him, and after him nagging I said ok but I can only pay you 5.00 a hr. He was happy as all get out, so I tought him for two years, I mean everything, I knew better. And now he quit me and bought his own welder and tools and stole some of mine to boot and competing with me - not for much longer though, he will be out of buiness pretty quick. I didnt teach him how to put your comption out of buss though.1990 SA 200Miller 225 Rip Miller302Miller 135Lincoln 200 MigHypertherm 600 PlasmaPlasma Cam Cutting TableMikita Cold SawJL Welding Tx . com |
