Ok..i'll do a quick intro since this is my first post,i am fabricator/welder of 20+ years, some pro and some hobby,autos,4x4's,ornamental and structural..etcMy question is from a long time debate on whats good to weld the mild steel axle tubes to the cast steel housing on rears? Some say just preheat a little to about 200 and weld with 7018Some say it must be preheated to 400 and use a Ni rod and cool slowlySome say 8018..Some say a cast iron type rod because no one knows the exact chemical composition and process they were made. And some say the cast iron rods are weaker than the steel being welded...I could go on and on about different opinions from welders and fabricators..lolSo..whats you're opinions..process,?type of rod?preheat? MIG..TIG..Stick?..etc..and the reasoning behind it?
Reply:With a stick welder I'd use 7018..Tig I'd use 70S-2.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:What Zap said; preheat, and go. Cover with a hot blanket or at the least keep out of the wind and let cool on it's own.And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
