I'm looking at buying a MIG lincoln 180 - lincoln says it will weld up to 3/16" aluminum. Will it do 3/16" or is that really pushing it to the max.? Does adding the spool gun allow you to weld thicker alumnium? Please let me know your experience welding aluminum with this machine / spool gun.
Reply:3/16 is probably pushing it...but I think somebody with more exp. could do it easily.I've heard if you backstep as you weld that helps.I got the spool gun for mine and it seems to like 1/8" best.
Reply:You're going to be running it at the absolute max settings if you want to weld 3/16" aluminum. The duty cycle will be somewhere in the 10-20% range, if that! This means you will weld 1-2 mins and have to wait 8-9 mins for the machine to cool down. If you want to run any meaningful amount of aluminum an upgrade to a 255 is needed. The 215 can handle it slightly better then the 180, but I would just make the jump to a small industrial machine (PM255) and forget about your machine being too small. If you cannot convince them, confuse them.
