I am about done with my table and want to add a vice that is easily removable, I've read in other posts about mounting them on a hitch and wondered how strong this method is?Here are some pics of what I was thinking of doing but am not sure if it will be strong enough. The vice weighs about 80lb the plate is dam near the same(its 18" diameter by 1 1/4 thick). Would I be able to weld the plate right to the bottom of the hitch, mount the vice to the plate and weld the receiver (seamless tube) to the table like I have it clamped, or will it need more support? Reply:The receiver hitch should work fine ,they are rated  for 500# tounge weight in normal usage. With that round plate and the hole in the receiver you could add a pivot and some stops to allow for 90 degree rotation.
Reply:I'd at least try to band that receiver tube at the insert end. Stry to stop any potential for egging out. In your case where you want to weld flush it could be banded and three sides and finish it with your longitudinal weld. Burn around any ends and corners good. Don't leave any place for a crack to get started. Now on the fun side, my initial reaction is that 160#'s worth of vise isn't what I'd call easily removable. I could do it, sure, if I had to. You can probably do it easier but it still isn't something that you are going to want to just pop off there on a whim.  Mount that big puppy on a bench of his own and get a cheapo for the welding table. There is also a certain amount of wobble with any of the receiver type connections. That wobble could be problematic as heck once in awhile.

Reply:Great idea to mount it. I think the round plate is a little over-kill on sizing/thickness to mount it though. John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:Here was my idea: Use your grinder to score out a hole in the concrete floor. Chip out the concrete. Place the receiver in the hole. Refill with fresh concrete with just a hair of receiver tube sticking above the concrete. Let cure. Grind flush. Insert vise stand into receiver hitch in the vertical position. Want to move it? Pull it up and out. Make a flat hitch cover and place in receiver tube. Ha. Sturdy stand. Moveable.
