Any of the advertised chemical cleaners to remove rust?  I see Evaporate Rust etc at Tractor supply, but have been leary to try them as they mention nothing about welding.  I am afraid of the fumes that might come off that may be harmful or the residue that may effect the weld quality.  Any comments/suggestions.Thanks.Best Times with 434 Naturally Aspirated Vette60 - 1.261/8 -  6.37@ 107.25 MPH 1/4 - 10.08 & 134.9MPH1/4 - 9.60@144MPH
Reply:Clean it real good afterwards with a wire wheel and wipe it with acetone or denatured alchohol and that should take care of any remaining rust or residue from the cleaner.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:They're all some form of phosphoric acid and they all work.  They will remove light surface rust (the red kind) and nothing more.  They will not touch pitting rust, scaling rust, or mill scale.  The fumes are minor, it's an acid and will irritate your lungs if you breath concentrated fumes.  It doesn't take much ventillation to keep them clear.  You know you drink phosphoric acid in your Coke.
Reply:what is the application? Would a wire wheel on die grinder, side grinder or a sanding disc not do the job? If the finished surface/coat is the concern, Loctite makes a product, Rust Extended Treatment. It kills present rust and prevents future rusting. It brushes on and when dry, leaves a nice black polymer finish that can be used as is or for a primer coat. It contains vinylpolmer acicriliftate...something. Works well on weathered steel.Miller TrailBlazer 251Miller HF-250-1Miller MaxStar 150 STLHyperTherm PowerMax 380 plasmaLincoln PowerMig 180Millermatic 252Miller Diversion 180

Reply:Probaly won't help this time - ya already got the steel.  Here's a hot roll steel that doesn't rust and welds with less fumes since i t doesn't have the oil coating used to prevent rust. Check it out:SCS = smooth clean surface sheet steel
