My Generator issue - 220v

First, I think I solved the issue.Issue: Want to run SP175 Plus on generator. Bought Briggs & Stratton rate 6200 watts, starting 8750 watts, Portable Generator. $899. Electric start. 120-240V-30A, 120V-20A. Looked big enough, but it's not. Finally took it to Phoenix welding service center. They said, Generator to small. The welder drags the voltage down to 176V. Made the welder Un-usable. I'm using for now, the 120V side of generator for my SP135 Plus 120v welder. Using .030 flexcore on 1/16 to 1/18 galvanize pipe. Running at max. About 600 feet done, a bunch to go. Don't have a need to build 120V 30A power cord. Will return to Sears when new one comes in on Jan 6. Trade up Generac 8000 Watts Electric Start Portable Generator, starting 10,000 watts. Really didn't have a use for a 10,000 generator, it wouldn't run the house. The 17,000 Generac was getting up to $3000, not in the budget. No use for a welder generator.VernLast edited by Vern2; 12-16-2009 at 08:45 AM.

Reply:Something fishy with the whole affair seems like. That 175 shouldn't pull 30 amps for any longer than it takes to trip it's internal breaker if you clipped the leads together. The 30 amp on that gen set should trip if it's pulling the whole set down to 176 across with a load. Or was there a 30 amp breaker on that genset? Reply:Originally Posted by DesertRider33Could very well be the problem.  I doubt it's a 6-50 plug though.  Most portable generators use a dual-voltage 110/220 4-wire outlet instead of a 3-wire 220v outlet.  My guess is the outlet is probly a 14-50 or an L14-30.

Reply:*** Bought Briggs & Stratton rate 6200 watts, starting 8750 wattsWhat happened?Have tried the new Generator (Generac 8k - max 10k). Works great! Weight is 8lbs less at 192lbs. Will run SP175 plus, no problem. Measuring volts. The Volts change from 114v to 117v (when measuring just a 120v outlet. when starting to weld. On the Briggs & Stratton 6200k - max 8700k volts went down to 88v  (measuring across a 120v outlet) when welding. Both welders plugged into the NEMA 614-30. Had my adapter checked by Phx welding. They said the generator was to small. Cost me $35 to have checked. Moved both welder and generator to phoenix shop. All I know the new generator works. Now back to work on fence.I did not use any mask on the galvanize pile. Reply:I'd say your 6200 watt gen. either has something wrong with it or the manufacture inflated the watt rating of it.Tough as nails and damn near as smart
