Ok so I recall seeing a thread on here regarding "the best" or "favorite" welding book. I am trying to find a book that will help me out at work. Right now I assist other welders and teach machinists how to weld. My shop has the capabilities to do MIG, TIG, and SMAW, pesonally, I need to practice TIG because I havent done it in years so if I could find a book that just lays out the simple basics of how to weld with different processes as well as show guides on electrodes, gas, and metal compatibilities that would be great. Just don't want to make myself look like an a$$ hat to some guy who has been welding since the dawn of time. Guys have any suggestions? I know there is the "Machinist Handbook", is there a equivelent to welding?FLASH ME.... I'm a welder

Reply:Troy44B,  Try the Hobart Weld Talk forum.  There is a thread, mostly added by PTsideshow, that has many, many welding related publications.  I have a couple of them, and from a new welders standpoint, they are invaluable.  Having spent 20+ years in Uncle Sams service, I know what you mean about evaluations.  Good luck with teaching those crusty old farts something about welding!! Reply:Troy,Being retired military, I understand your dilema. One of the toughest jobs I ever had was as commander of a basic training company at Ft. Knox, KY in 1968.  The entire company was made up of USAR and NG recruits.  Every one of them had a college degree.  They drove my DI's crazy with their "why" questions.  As an example, a DI states, "The maximum effective range of the M14 rifle is 375 yards".  Then came the "who says so", "how did they determine that", "why not 400 yards", etc, etc.Today's troops, being better educated, more informed (they think), I'm sure will test your mettle.I'd recommend (as has been mentioned) that you go to Millerwelds.com and order their "Instructor Pack".  It can be found under the resources tab.  It will include an excellent TIG Handbook, a GMAW Handbook, a Pulsed-Mig Handbook, welding calculators, and a bunch of other useful information.  The Tig Handbook alone would be worth the price ($35 including shipping).  It could well serve as a course outline for a basic TIG weldnig class.Feel free to PM me if you desire additional information/suggestions regarding an approach to take with your students.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:Modern welding is a great all round welding text. My only question and I don't mean any disrespect by it. Why is the welders assistant teaching welding and not the welder? Doesn't the military have standards for teaching like being certified or qualified in some way? Or at the very least know what your doing and how to actually do what your teaching. Could you imagine if the person who taught you to fire a rifle in training didn't actually really know how to use a gun and was asking on the internet for books on guns so he could teach people how to use one.  That's just scary! Again I don't mean any disrespect but if I found out the person teaching me didn't have a clue what they were doing and I was in charge of giving them promotions they would never ever get one from me. Just my 2cents I don't know anything about the military so maybe that's just how its done.
Reply:Wellll, without getting into the military thing or even which trade or craft, we all started at zero at some point and grew from there. It appears as tho Troy44B is entering into an aspect where it is going to be awkward and demanding for awhile. That's why teachers stay up at night hitting the books. With some help he'll come up to speed I'm sure.

These are major criteria that are part of evaluations / Fitness Reports that determine advancement within the Military.Would not any welder be better at the trade if they first trained as Instructor before breaking out into the field with the practical application? Reply:Since the OP (Troy) has not responded, let me try to answer a few of the other poster comments/questions.I spent 20+ years in leadership roles in the US Military.  (Retired Col. in the Army Corps of Engineers) and had my fair share of "teaching assignments".Based on what little information that is available, I commend Troy for taking the approach he has taken.  The criticism of his approach comes from those who are uninformed about what they're talking about. The field of welding is extremely broad.  Few are "experts/proficient" in all aspects of the field.  Troy may be the best stick/mig welder on the planet but has not had the opportunity to develop skill in the area of tig.  He then finds himself placed in a positon where he has to provide instruction in the area.  He asks how to improve his knowledge base and he's blasted.  Bad response people. In the area of Ordinance/Engineer Equipment/Transportation Equipment, tig is a seldom used process.  Stick/mig are the "go to" processes used in the repair/modification of military equipment.  Tig is way down the list of "necessary processes".  In fact, there are few "welding positions" in the military that require a proficiency in the tig process. To even imply that Troy may not be a "qualified welding instructor" because he's not proficient in one process is quite a reach.  How many "structural welders" out there are also proficient in TIG welding.  Not many I can assure you.The fact that Troy recognizes that he may be somewhat lacking in a particular "skill set" and has asked for help in improving his knowledge base is what's important and, to me, is the mark of a "good instructor".The comment about teaching rifle marksmanship without knowing how to fire a rifle is a bad example.  An individual may in fact know how to fire a weapon and know the weapons capabilities and is thereby qualified to teach "rifle marksmanship".  That same individual may not know how to build the rifle or even teach "sniper tactics", but that doesn't mean he's not qualified to teach basic marksmanship.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.

Reply:Hey guys,I believe Troys' initial post was referencing information to assist his "re-entry" back into TIG welding as he indicated prior experience, albeit a bit rusty. Seems some really off-tangent responses weren't needed to simply provide some of the really good welding books/data available. Personally, I also like farmersams', the "Bible", Lincolns' book, as my #1 reference as well as others in my small welding library. The Miller package is a deal also.I believe SundownsIII's reply was probably the best & most concise to help Troy with his efforts.
