I park my titan in front of the garage and have been doing alot of welding and grinding in the garage. I have a fan that blows out and yesterday i was washing my truck and the hood and top of the cab was very rough. Like if i went over it with a sand paper. I havnt tryed to wax it yet but man it was rough. Could it be from the welding and grinding in the garage?
Reply:Grinding dust and sparks will do a number on anything they come near.  Just ask the Anderson window that was replaced at my house!
Reply:yes, grinding debris and welding sparks will embed themselves in paint very easily.  The top of my work truck looks like it's rusting, but it's just debris from a job I foolishly did standing on the bed, throwing sparks in the wrong direction.IF it's not too bad, one of those clay bars they sell in the auto parts stores might lift the debris out of the paint.  Best to try before it starts to rust; that'll make a real mess of your paint job.  If not, you'll probably need a real auto detailer to using rubbing compound on a buffer to remove the debris and any staining.  Worst case, it's wet sanding and re applying a clear coat to the affected areas.I'd move quickly before anything embedded in the paint starts to rust...good luck. Reply:Yeah get a clay bar, I did the same thing to my hood and there were tiny little rust spots. I had to have the hoot sanded down and repainted. $200 screw up.If you cannot convince them, confuse them.         Harry S Truman
Reply:Even though the truck isn't direct contact of the grinding dorks this would still effect it? I'm grinding about 10 ftnin the garge. Is it the dust?
Reply:I've seen the sparks imbed themselves in glass a lot farther than 10'..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan

Reply:If you do get rust, it can be removed with Oxalic acid solution, using a wet rag or sponge to hold it in place a while. That won't hurt the paint or the steel underneath it. Phosphoric acid will do the same, but requires more care; it will restore some color to old metallic paints too.
Reply:I have seen glass with sparks in it so bad, it tore the wipers all to hell. At least you caught it, I would take care of it asap. Post a picture of your hood and I am sure someone will tell you what it is.

Reply:I can't see sparks traveling over 9 ... 12 feet. Just an out of the box thought is over spray from the hood. That stuff can travel a half a block. Try solvent soaked rag and see if it comes off. You'll know which one did it. I've had my truck parked in my shop for 6 years. Paints as smooth as glass.Vern
Reply:took it to the dealer today and he used terpinine and it came off. Its was greenish and he said they had never seen anything like that. The warrenty doesnt cover it so i have to take it to someone who can. It looked like pine tar when he took it off with a white rag. it didnt penetrate the paint. He said it was laying on top. Labor intensive but didnt damage it.
Reply:We've ruined more paint jobs, windows etc. in our shop from grinding and welding that I can shake a stick at. At any one time we've got at least two tandems being worked on as well as the plows around it in the shop. Even the dust from the shop plays hell on the paint if you park the truck outside that's been in the shop for a couple days in damp weather it'll rust. Our service truck is constantly getting a new windshield, working on our ferries it's inevitable that you get sparks over everything. Half the time we end up using the truck to stand on working underneath the ramps etc.....Mike
