Just started Harry Home Owner Welding with my HH 125. Still practicing on every piece of metal I can find. I came across a tank with these markings/numbers stamped  on it. Tank is red 24 " high    27" high with valvue   25" diameterDOT-3AA1800HD 3033513  76    CL 1446I took pictures but can't figure out how to attach them I would like to trade up this tank for some small oxg/act tanks.Any idea of value on this tank without pictures.I already said I'm new, so be gentle.
Reply:Look at the valve. There should be a CGA number marked on it. That will tell what gas it is if its a commercial gas cylinder. The size seems odd, it sounds too wide for that height to me.  DOT -3AA1800 tells me it's a steel 1800 PSI tank, so I'm thinking it may be CO2 or possibly an old steel 72cf scuba tank. The Scuba tank would be my 1st guess except for the odd width. If it's a Scuba tank, it will have a round bottom most likely, not a flat bottom, but may have a plastic boot to sit flat on the floor. The 76 tells me that it's out of hydro test since 1981.As far as picts, 1st resize your picts with a program like MS picture manager. Then when you do your reply scroll down to where it says "manage attachments" and click on that. It will bring up a window that has "upload files from your computer" at the top. Click "browse" and find the 1st pict and select it, then click "upload". Repeat as needed. In the text area you can insert the picts by clicking on the paper clip and selecting the image you want to insert, or if you don't select any the program will automatically add them at the end.If you can post the pict I can probably tell you what you've got, especially if you find the CGA number. If you can't post the picts still, PM me and I'll send you my email address and maybe you can shoot the picts that way and I'll post them.Good luck..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Here is a thread about attaching pictures, and it allows testing of the procedure in it too. http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=111That also sounds to me like a CO2 bottle, although small cylinders like it can be used for lots of different gasses in labs, so the valve will give you the best answer, as DSW explained.
Reply:Take it to wherever you are going to try and exchange it- they'll know what it isEd Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:I scuba dive, so it's not scuba. I'll check the valve in the am for the number and try the pic thing thanks. I know I can't use it, just seeing if I can make a trade not money.
Reply:We'll see what happens with these pics Attached Images
Reply:See above pics. Here's what I was talking about. Any ideas? Would this be a good trade for a set of oxg/act tanks. Used stuff.
Reply:How about a pic of the open end of the valve??Just from what I see, that's a 20# CO2 tank, I have never yet seen a lws that rents those;  ie, they don't own any, and would probably not be interested in them.   You can always call and check, though, and they could perhaps help you market them.  Every 20# CO2 tank I've seen, is owned by the actual user.
Reply:If I'm reading the numbers right, 3/76 is the last hydro on these, way out of date ....Edit:   I see DSW caught that at the beginning.Last edited by jsfab; 01-26-2010 at 01:21 PM.

Reply:You have a Hobart HH125. You could get that filled with 100% CO2 I believe and get an adapter to fit the reg to convert to CO2, and use that with solid wire. I don't use 100% CO2 with my migs, I prefer 75/25 myself. Using CO2 you will get a cleaner weld than flux core, but not as nice as 75/25. On the up side, you will get a bit more penetration with CO2 than with 75/25 which can help some with small migs.Near me a new hydro runs about $30-40. I don't know what a fill would run you. I don't even know if the LWS I use swaps CO2 cylinders, but if pushed I would think they do. If so they might be willing to swap gases and give you a tank of 75/25 instead and ding you for the new test. All you can do is try. It's one of the reasons I really suggest guys shop local instead of online. I have no issues swapping tanks, or even getting no charge short term loaners, even though I don't spend a fortune at the shop. They see me on a regular basis, picking up small items and get to recognize me. Usually when I get a "new" tank off CL or something, they don't even bother to check the test date, they just swap it out. As said at worst you can always post it up in the sale section, or on CL. A lot of guys on the 4x4 site like CO2 for mig because its cheap. You might find a buyer on one of them if nothing else..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:My LWS pumps its own CO2, and would even pay for the hydro-test  of bottles for its regular customers. I have a few of those bottles, and a larger 75/25 too. I think the CO2 bottles are usually, if not always, customer owned around here, but I could be wrong about this, and I'm not going to bother the shop right now to call and ask.
Reply:That is a CO2 bottle for postmix. Fountain drinks. Alot of these things go 20+ years out of hydro because the companies just don't care. Looks like Pepsico to me. Might be Coke but I doubt it.
