I've been using a Northern Industrial TECMEN auto-dark helmet, mainly because it is relatively cheap. However, the headgear has been crapping out on me- raising and lowering the helmet becomes a problem, because the thing's made of flimsy plastic so it goes lower than it's supposed to when I flip it down (i.e. the glass is touching my nose, and I have to reposition the headgear weirdly to get the face to fit right.)I've had quite enough of that. What brands make a helmet with a headgear that works well and is sturdy, that isn't made of cheap, thin, weak parts?also, apparently, the mark of a good headgear maker is that they sell headgear separately so you can replace it. Who does this?Keeping it down in the hood...literally!
Reply:Numorous companies make replaceable head gear. there are tons of good auto darkening hoods out there. I personally have two ot them. jackson Next-gen and a Jackson Boss, both are good hoods that were around $300. They are quite advanced thought, both of them have a grinding setting that holds the shade at a 3 and they both have a torch setting which holds the shade at 5. Those lenses will fir in a number of different hoods. The Shadow or the Halo are the two I have had mine in. I like the Halo better because it is lighter in weight and more flexiable. If you are in the market for one that is a little more sturdy maybe the Shadow is a better fit for you. Speedglass makes some good ones but they are a little litghter and more flexiable. So many of these hoods are that way because they are easier on your head and neck. I am a boilermaker by trade so I do a lot of welding and thats why I pefer a lighter more flexiable hood.
Reply:I'm almost 100% sure my Miller Elite has replaceable headgear. I know my Jackson fixed shade does, and so does my old AD Lincoln.I replaced the head gear on both the Lincoln and the Jackson over the years. Actually, I used the same headgear to fix the broken headgear on my grinding face shield when it crapped out on a job one time. That shield wasn't designed to be replaceable, but  a bit of grinding to remove the old hardware, 2 large holes for the main screws, and a couple small ones for the adjustment pins and I was all set. I swiped the head gear off the Jackson that I keep as a backup, and slapped it on the face shield and went back to work. I swung by the LWS on the way home and grabbed a new set for the Jackson..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:I upgraded 2 of my Jackson auto hoods, one an HSL100 and the other a Halo-X, with the new Jackson adjustable headgear.   The new headgear is great, much better than any previous headgear by Jackson.  The new headgear I'm talking about is not included with their hoods, it is only sold seperately, so far as I know.   I made a post about it here awhile ago.  Search for 'new jackson headgear' and my user name and it should come up.   I listed the part number and link to product in that post.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:One more thing to consider is whether or not the manufacture of your next helmet makes a hardhat adapter.
Reply:Both the Jackson and Miller hoods can have replacement headgear ordered for them. As I weld every day of the week with a hardhat, I had fun trying to find a welding shield with a good hardhat adaptor. The Jackson hoods are my definite pick for field construction work, but the hardhat adaptors for them suck!! The Miller, at least to me, has an awsome hardhat headgear setup. So with the help of a small diegrinder, my Jackson headgear mounting holes (on the hood) went from round to square. Voila!, Jackson NexGen w/ Miller Hardhat headgear. Took a little creativity, but it was well worth it!Miller XMT-3502 Lincoln Power Mig 140C (One w/ dedicated spoolgun)Jackson NexGen / Miller Digital EliteMiller S32P SuperWeldcraft 17fv & 9fv Tig TorchVictor & Purox O/ALincoln Ranger 9Fairly Cold Beer!!

Reply:I bought the Huntsman Nitro. http://www.jacksonsafety.com/linkdet...roupid=3018230about $100 or so down at WeldingDepot. It's supposed to come standard with the Jackson 370 headgear.A little bit more expensive, but I've bought that cheap one twice, so it'll work out in the long run. Thanks guys.Keeping it down in the hood...literally!
