Heres the welding project this am..its called a "walking arm" that goes inside a bulldozer somewhere..we usually re-bore the arm and sleeve it then weld the outside and re-bore for the bushings..the customer did not want sleeves..he wanted it welded and then bored....heres the piece..Attachment 4671pics of inside..Attachment 4672Attachment 4673Attachment 4674this was what i sat on...(my back is killing me now..)Attachment 4675i hav'nt done upside down welding in years..i had a very hard time seeing when it was overhead..i wear 3-way progressive glasses..if you dont know what that means..the top part you look thru is for far away stuffthe middle of the lenses is for watching tv and that sort of thingthe bottom of  the lenses are for reading the newspaper and such..well when i got to the overhead part i was using the tops of the lenses..only natural having to look up..but everything was blurey..to solve that i wore the glasses upside down..worked great!first time for everything i guess... ...zap!Last edited by zapster; 12-27-2007 at 05:22 PM.I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:How are you going to bore it, on a mill on a lathe? I'd like to see that set up.What rod did you use?Thank much for sharing.
Reply:Funny you would post this.  I was making some dies for a roller. I made the bore too large.  I had considered building them up and reboring them.  Since I was dealing with some "work around " situations  the difference between build-up and remaking the parts is a "...6 of one and half dozen of the other" deal. They are too large because I made them the size on my unmachined shaft.  I was  supposed to reduce the size 1/8 in prior so they there would be a stop for the die.By the way, how many passes to you have in there?
Reply:at first i thought that was all stick welded, than I seen you footpedal in the last pic, Man I bet that took you some time to do that, there is alot of welding there. Very nice, what dia filler were you using on that, and what is the material type
Reply:What kind of preheat did you use?
Reply:thanks for the questions...tapwelder it will be bored out on a horizontal boring mill (not my job)..(will post pics if you wish..rod was 70S-2 1/16passes?..3 hrs worth  elder thats your answers also and it started out as cast steel as far as the orig part goes..lotech..no pre heat was done @180 amps pure argonwhen you get the opportunity to try something like that...do itit will only make you better.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Odd that you would not preheat.  Why?  Do you end up with any hard spots for the machinist to complain about?  That beam looks  like the main support between the CAT frame and the front section of the swing frame?
Reply:Just want to say that, when welding something like this remeber it has to be machined after, so you don't want a what I call a super hard weld, causes alot of tool breakage and alot of time! You don't want alot of interuption in the cut for a smooth bore

Reply:Now there you go Zap....that is a definite "teaching" moment....  I haven't welded upside down...but I did do a fair amount of tequila shooters "upside down" when I was in college...Having to admit to "age" this year and get some "closeup" glasses I can sure relate to your situation...BTW...pretty cool work
Reply:Great work Zap.A lot of my work seems to be upside down, Machinery that is to big and heavy to roll over.Simonhttp://members.optusnet.com.au/~abba/index.html
