I was foolin around with the 'spot' timer thing and used it to 'weld' a cap on a leg of my mig table. Attached Images"after a long day of doing nothing...its gooood to kick back" Pumbaa

Reply:Good point on the cover weld. the pic is of a desert prerunner, and yes, they take a hell of a beating.

Course when these coilovers rip off the owner will think he was 'really gettin it' and not bat an eye when he throws a few more bills this shops way to 'upgrade'.... Reply:I was going to post that picture every time somebody talks about "stack of dimes" weld beads, but I finally got around to taking the picture tonight.
Reply:I tell my nephew's with the welding shop when they ask me how my welding is going, "I'm just making dimes" is what I usually say. I like your pic, thanks and yeah, my stick beads look just like that!!

Reply:I've done some destructive testing using a tack and move techinique on my mig vs. standard SST. For sheet and exhaust tube, its great and had no difference in strength. With thicker items, if you crank the heat up it was not noticably weaker. Problem with that is wire burnback. Granted, my testing techniques are not exactly scientific, but the destructive testing and cutting a cross section was enough to convince me its acceptable for non-cert work. Its not going to pass xray but if you can deal with the burn back I think its fine for more general fab.Some people would rather ever weld they make be like they were doing a coupon. In the real world, you have to do what works and this style of pulsing mig does the trick in certain circumstances IMO. |
