i am new in a welding course and doing ok.. i can get my money back still if i decide to leave the class and im trying to evaluate if its a good idea for me to stay or not. my issues with it is the health risks associated with the fumes. i really dont want to die of lung cancer. my main concern right now is if ill even be able to get employment... my lifestyle wont call for constant employment in fact i am avoiding that. me and my girlfriend are saving money to buy a piece of property in the forest and build a home there. we will be using natural resources instead of paychecks. so if i complete my course successfully and weld professionaly for a year or 2 then leave the job scene for at least 5 years or more... would i even have a chance getting hired? would employers generally look down on my compared to other welders who have had a steady welding job for years? and if this is the case... could i offset this disadvantage by simply self employing myself?

Reply:I dont know if you will be able to earn top dollar with a career plan like that, but the more skills you learn the more odd jobs you can do. I wouldnt want to hire anyone that didnt want a full time job because an employee is a long term investment for me, being a small shop. There are plenty of shutdown type jobs that are perfect for your plan. The main thing is, you need to stick to it long enough to gain the skills it takes to get those jobs. Many pipe welders only work part of the year. Pipeliners and process pipe guys. Everybody wants to be laid off during deer season. The last thing I would worry about is lung cancer, a little common sense goes a long way.

Reply:The whole idea behind the question ticks me off. As much as I (and I'm sure many others) would love to live a life of self sufficiency, it's impossible nowadays unless as previously mentioned, you have a trust fund (a BIG one). What really sits wrong with me is the fact that I and everyone else has to earn their living due to years of proving themselves and being reliable. Oh, and for the lung cancer; there are all types of protective products and equipment on the market, not to mention OSHA is always looking over the shoulder of employers.Last edited by papabear; 02-08-2010 at 09:36 PM."SOUTHPAW" A wise person learns from another persons mistakes;A smart person learns from their own mistakes; But, a stupid person.............never learns.

Reply:his girlfriend speaking: there are many people living totally and partially 'off the land'. my parents and i did it when i was young, you can get very cheap land in some places.. why would we need a trust fund? if you save your money, not spending it on cigarettes, movies, alcohol, and all the frivolous materialistic crap most people do... and you keep your living expenses very low, you can save plenty of money to buy that cheap land within a couple of years. once we get everything that we need, we wont have need to have employment full time on a regular basis... taking care of our basic needs such as clothing, gardening, and food gathering/hunting, chopping, will consume most of our time (hard work)but before that we'll need to work full time... why should i have a life where i spend the rest of my time working full time in a city job if im more happy working the same hard work out in the country? and only have to work seasonal. we have other hobbies that bring income. you dont know how we live or what we do so dont jump to conclusions. instead of starting out being a smartass and cocky about everything and making fools of yourselves, maybe you should approach a situation a little more respectfully. he was in no way disrespectful with his question, so just answer his question or dont but you dont have enough knowledge of our situation to make such judgements or remarks about whether or not he knows or is doing hard work.
Reply:I will call it as I see it; You, jht5fd, are a touch-hole. The society closest to "living off the land" are the Amish (which are local around here), and the PA Dutch. Even they have to earn a living to pay for property taxes. The government isn't too keen on bartering. They work for a living and earn their wages based on all that everyone else is; Proving themselves and being reliable."SOUTHPAW" A wise person learns from another persons mistakes;A smart person learns from their own mistakes; But, a stupid person.............never learns.

Reply:and "girlfriend"; How do you-all expect to pay for electricity & internet & T.V. (probably cell-phone too), without working steady? Also, I have to add, if "he" is going to welding school to weld for a couple of years & save his earnings, then drop off the grid; why bother? A couple of years of welding is just the beginning of a life-long learning experience. That would be a prime example of throwing money away.
Reply:"you should take a course in blacksmithing" thats exactly what i want. me and her are actually going to take this up as a profession also. this type of life i will probably have many professions... ill be a trained welder, wilderness guide, bladesmith, builder, electrician (solar, water resistance) etc... there are no bladesmith classes around here though. and what you were saying about getting hired were exactly my thoughts too... why would they hire this dude who hasnt had a job in 6 years when there are other welders on his desk who have? but like i said im going to have to self employ i guess... and welding is practical for my life. steel frame constructs, truck trailers, etc. for the 2 decent people who have visited the thread, thanks.
Reply:Actually, the more I think about it, be self employed as a weldor may work for you. As mentioned befor even the amish have jobs to pay for taxes, and especially medical bills. My parents neighbor does general welding for the other amish and local farmers.Only reason I bother giving a response is because your girlfriend can keep a pleasant tone. You should learn from her. Whenever some one talks smack, and you talk smack back, it just makes matters worse. If you can learn to just shrug stuff off, people would be a little more friendly to you. Sure, some of the initial responses were uncalled for, but your response to them just got everyone worked up. If you would have shown a more mild disposition, like your girlfriend, helpfull comments would have come along eventually.
Reply:by the way property tax and what few bills we will have have already been worked out suffice it to say... none of your damn business.
Reply:hey grim reread my first post... i came in here with a pleasant tone. i was perfectly friendly... and even after the first 5 assholes came in i kept quiet... so people push my buttons and i cant say **** in my own defense? i think you should reevaluate your thought process on this topic... what you said really isnt fair to me.
Reply:I know you came in with a pleasant tone. Never said you didn't. I acknowledge that they threw the first stones. But if you look through any threads where the OP gets hit off the bat with rude remarks, you'll find that they respond in two ways. 1: they react the way you did and wind up getting booted off eventually. or 2: They take it, keep a mild attitude and eventually get some help. Think of it as an initiation kind of thing. Put up with the crap for a little bit, show you're a good sport, and in a little while you'll be part of the group.

Reply:Boys what we got us here is one of them matriculated citiots who thinks he's going to learn enough in some dumas weldunce school to have a value in the world of work in a depressed economy. The boy done went and learned about Big Bucks in Welding from the back of a matchbook, and now he believes. Hell when he heard stinger & whip he probably figured he knew half of the course material cause he can already whip his pecker till it stings. He probably believed in Obama too.Punks like that caused all those dang fall restraint regulations OSHA wrote cause they fell off a lot of scaffold and iron.

Reply:Sidetrack warning.....What's with those fookin fall restraint regs anyways. 6ft off the ground and you have to have a harness, but the damn tether is 5ft long and hooked in the middle of your back.My name's not Jim....
Reply:So back to my parents amish neighbor that welds for the local farmers. Does that sound like something you could do in your area? Since you plan to live off grid (I assume) you'll either want to learn how to use an oxy/ace setup, or you'll need to get an engine driven welder. If blacksmithing is something you're interested in you'll find an oxy/ace torch very handy. Used to do some smithing myself. Just decorative stuff, not the bladesmithing you were talking about.
Reply:Wow. This thread is a classic - we've even got a Vet getting all riled up calling people a 'retard'.You might learn enough in a welding course to be able to do stuff for yourself, but you're probably not going to get people paying you to do stuff - especially if you dip in and out of society.Hang onto that girlfriend of yours.Yeah, I carry.House keys, wallet, some change, usually a newspaper, maybe a pen.
