In the plant I work in I'm the welder for the maint. dept. We have a Lincoln Tig 300/300AC-DC. The shop electricians installed the unit to 480 1ph. The welder is grounded to a 12' earth ground, grounded to the disconnect which is tied into a Square D 480v bus bar that runs the length of the shop, and my welding table is also grounded to the earth ground. The problem I am having is that when I weld alum. with HF the safety director is telling me that I am setting off the building's burglar alarms. Is this possible? The alarm Co. has been out 3 times and told the electrictians the welder should have no effect on their system. Has anyone else had this problem or know of a solution?
Reply:Sounds like you have a building Ground Loop. Everything should be grounded to the same ground source, wired like a STAR. If the Tig is grounded to the buildings ground and the table to a ground rod, when you clamp the Tig ground to the table you have a loop between the table ground rod and the building ground rod causing stray eddy currents that do as they please.
Reply:Thanks for the info.
Reply:Looks like them alarm tecknicheuns know everything.Have fun continuing to set their halfazzed alarm off.Are they from ADT? |
