if i were to drive pizza to customers houses i would not work unless i was at the very least payed back for gas. in the welding industry how realistic is this expectation? i would expect my employer to supply me with any necessary tools for the job such as my wire or filler and gasses etc while i bring my own tools... if this is not normal practice in industry (bull****)... what do you think would happen if i told my employer i expect him to buy the supplies that will be used for HIS structure. would he find a new welder or buy the wire and gas and such?

Reply:I guess it depends on if you are an independent contractor or a company employee, and the arrangements.  If you are considered an independant contractor, then you probably would be expected to supply the consumables.  If you aren't then the company by all means should.  Now, if you are a mechanic, a dealership will expect you to have your own tools...but not supply the sealant, cleaners, glue etc that are used in daily repair of the vehicle.  Do they require you to supply the welders too?  If they require you to supply the welders and the consumables then you ARE a independant contractor regardless of what you think. Do you get a 1099?  If you don't then I'd contact your local department of labor wage and hour division.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT

Reply:Hey jht5fd,I do all the aluminum work for my employer at my home shop. The company didn't want to invest in additional equipment & associated supplies and the owner asked me if I would do it at my home shop. He supplies all my needs, wire, a 125cf bottle of AR, sanding belts, cutoff discs, and anything else I need without question. He pays my shop wages & allows me to keep the leftover residual material, so I have no problems at all with it. Besides, it is nice to work at home. There is nothing wrong for you to request he supply any & all materials. If not, I have seen many get taken advantage of because of employment relationships. Don't get caught in a situation where your employer feels it is your duty to do his personal or even company work with your own supplies.DennyComplete Welding/Machine/Fab. Reply:yea for sure. i basically expect my employers to a. buy my consumables and supply me with them or b. give me the money after i buy it. like to roll it into the price of my contract. but i was just wondering what happens in you guy's experience. is it common to have to use your own money for consumables on their project? because i think this is bull**** but in america i wouldnt be surprised if this was the case. taking money out of my pay for their product is not ok.
Reply:It might kinda fall under the " How good are you, what's your attitude, etc." category. Generally, if you bring your own welder tot he job, and are paid daily/ hourly, then you should either have it worked into your rate, or have them hand you the filler rod/ etc. from their supply. It REALLY will depend on the type of job; tractor repair in the filed?? The rod's in your rig, you bill for it. Welding in the shop, with your own rig, then more likely we will have rod there for you( Especially graded, x-rayed pipe, etc.) Welding with our welders, in house?? All you'd have to do is ask for the stuff you need, it's there for you.If you go in with the same demeanor in your post??? I'd test you, without telling you. And if you were in general uptight and unruly, I'd replace you. Quickly. An ounce of sugar beats a pound of salt. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.

Reply:jht5fd,Based on the tone and demenor of your first post, I suspect you'll be delivering pizza for some time to come.As an "employee" I would expect the employer to provided the consumables (or reinburse you) for the materials used on a company job.  Never found this to be an issue if presented in an appropriate fashion.  Also, and if this becomes a regular proposition, I would expect an allowance for the use of my own "welding equipment".  Employees, depending on the trade, are expected to provide their own hand tools.  Larger tools (welding machines, lathes, drill press, saws, breaks, shears, etc) are generally provided by the employer. If you are an "independent contractor" you generally provide the bulk of the tools and the consumables and you factor that cost into your quote/hourly rate.Has this become an issue, or are you "dreaming up" issues to complain about?  You wern't very clear in your initial post.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:i only expressed an interest in not being ripped off by my employer... whats wrong with this? assuming youre not an employer that likes to rip off your employees yourself... then id totally see your problem with my demeanor

I can't believe I even typed that last sentence.Originally Posted by joedirt1966LarryO,Are you going to make John Lang pay for his own supplies?  I just couldn't resist asking.By the way, that's a nice rear end you have there.
