A use for I beam offcuts?

The big I beams - maybe 18 inches high. Or bigger.Or big universal beam offcuts.I keep seeing lengths of a foot or so (notice how I'm talking in those old fashioned measurements) sitting in recycling bins at the place I buy steel.They're such a great shape. Somebody must have done something interesting with them?Scott
Reply:ya know its probably one of those things that once you have a couple sitting around you can find all sorts of fun uses for them, and then wish you had some more.next time you see one in a recycle bin ask if you can "have" it, tell them its for somthing silly like a doorstop. im sure you can come up with several ideas within a few weeks (sorry i dont know the new base 10 measure for time). = }
Reply:They're happy for me have them. I was tempted to lug one home last week, but I've got quite a few things round the place that I've lugged home over the years and they are still where I put them.I like those offcuts - they look so sculptural. They'd make an interesting, though heavy, coffee table base. Or some low stools. Or ??????

Reply:If you need a flat surface to bang on and can't afford an anvil they do work.  Weld in several stiffener plates on each side of the web for stiffness.
Reply:I use I beam drops for the plate out of them. If we need gussets for other I beams or any small pieces. No sense in cutting pieces out of plate.

Reply:Yep I agree, take it and figure out what you want it for later. I picked up a couple old 20" split rims with lock rings awhile back and didn't know what to do with 'em. Reply:Funny i got 2 beams off a job the other day but they where far from end cuts 20 footers two be exact the labor/friend said they needed them off the job they where cleaning up 8"x28lbs per foot on my truck with the help of the lull.i,m in the process now of making one of them a gantry in my shop.

Reply:spuddown,Wouldn't you be using the plate out of H-beams, not I-beams? Correct me if I am wrong...I-beams top and bottoms gradually slope out. H-Beams are flat plate on top and bottom and in the middel. That is what I have thought all these years...I could be wrong. By the way, in my area there was a need for the railroad to replace an old culvert under the tracks that was made out of old rr ties. They brought in a bunch of 40ft I beams ( i think they are I) and used them as a level rail or tracks to run a boring machine under and through the track slope. When the job was done they left all those beams sitting there, out in the middle of the dessert, abandoned. about 8 of them. I would have them home if I had a freaking trailer big enough to put them on. I hate to cut such pretty virgin steel. That's not even recycling....they were just used to rest something on, never used structurally. Reply:1. Weld a bunch of the little pieces together to make really long ones.2. Collect enough of these long ones to build a 60' x 120' shop.3.
