i know most transformer cores are ferrite/Iron based but does anyone know if its possible to build a E I core from solid square stock? Ive seen inductors this way but how well do they work.Realgear 140 MIGMore DeWalt tools that I prolly needDIY 160 amp 40 OCV MOT Stick Welder
Reply:Any iron may be used as a core. Some iron alloys are better suited because they have a lower permeability, low magnetic resistance. In the EI core the air gap left by closing the E core with the I core has high permeability [resistance] and the magnetic flux [current] would not circulate well. Using an EI core with each section alternated, the effects of the air gaps are minimized making for a more efficient transformer. http://www.tpub.com/neets/book2/5c.htmhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetic_corehttp://www.vias.org/eltransformers/l...rs_07b_17.html

Reply:E-core power transformers are usually laminated. Each lamination is electrically isolated from its neighbor so the eddy current path is broken, increasing efficiency.Transit, you have it bas-ackwards--lower permeability means higher resistance to flux.Tim |
