I work at a gold mine and here is a picture of a bucket lip we installed.http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/turtle...cd.jpg&.src=ph
Reply:Now that is a big bucket!  How much preheat and What did you use?  Flux core?  or sub arc?  Several months ago we spliced two curved sections of three inch plate together.  It took weeks of fiddling around to get a good fit and sound weld.  We are hoping we don't get asked again to do the job.  The completed piece was for the bottom of a bucket in the Tar Sands.
Reply:Yeah I've herad of the tar sands as for how we welded the esco lip on we use a preheat of 250 degres fariegnhieht since the edge which is 4 inches thick it is buttered at esco, the process is dual shield using 71m and 75/25 utilizing stringer passes and back gouge root and blend grind.
Reply:We often do heavy sections but not that large in total size.  Our first attempt was to try to get a sub arc to weld along the curved butt joint by putting the whole thing on a rocker.  In the end they welded it up manually.  It took days.  You must have some big overhead cranes... 25 ton plus??
Reply:yup the crane in the shop has a 5 ton hook and a 30 ton hook on same assy we use the hooks in tandem to roll in what ever position we need the bucket in.
Reply:That is a big bucket, any idea how many lbs of wire you burned in?
Reply:an average of 10 25 lb rolls
Reply:Dat is one biiiiig bucket.  How long did it take to burn it in? What size wire?
Reply:Hey! Anybody seen my bucket!?  I left it somewhere around here. Oh, here it is!Flipping hades turwilliger!...The funny thing is that just a PART of something bigger.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:Hey smithboy the picture i have is not very good but here is a link to one.http://images.search.yahoo.com/searc...t%3Fei%3DUTF-8
Reply:It takes anywhere's from 20 to 30 days dependining on manpower and severity of repairs, sometimes we just install new wear iron and tooth adapters. We use 7i m or elite .045 0r 1/16 dual shield 75/25. to remove lip we use a buggo track torche and air carbon arc cutting with 3/8 electrodes.
Reply:That is a big chunk of metal!! The biggest CAT attachment I've welded on is a 980 wheel loader bucket.Always looking for another old VW, especially in the southeast.
Reply:GAWD!!!  You know it's HEAVY EQUIPMENT when it has a built-in sidewalk on it.  I have an old high school friend that works on Cats in the GA area.  He mentioned that when they break, they are too big to move, so he was always traveling to fix stuff.  I get the picture now.  As a kid, I used to like looking at those books that had pictures of huge heavy equipment in places like humongous quaries...Terex was a favorite.  They always had a picture of a man next to the front tire or something...I just figured they only existed in theory or in books or somewhere folks are trying to dig to the center of the earth.  Just think what the ancient Egyptians would have built if they had a few of these!!!Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:look closley at the truck picture in my sig there is a guy standing in front of the tire this is the biggest truck cat makes but we don't have any here but I have worked on 793 which are 240 ton.We also have a 994 cat largest wheel loader.
