CWB being the canadian version of AWS .. but ya how many certifications does each one have? and i just mean different types of actual welding, not inspector courses or anything, just plain welding certs, thanks
Reply:Lots. I forget how high the AWS goes, low to mid 20's. I was certified D17.1 for aircraft. Then there's all kinds of variations. Under D17.1 I had to be certified for each different material I used, and for each position I welded in. I had over a dozen specific certs just under D17.1. Then on top of that there are other certifications outside of AWS. A couple I know off hand would be API (American Petrolium Institute), ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers). I've also had eropean certs of some kind (equivalent to ASME sec. 9), and german certs (to make parts for AirBus).

Reply:snappy101-  for starters get all of AWS codes in your possesion then go through them and count how many pre-qualified joints there are (no doubles) out of all codes then presume there are that many dealing with CWB.  Have FunWeldor/ Certified Inspector
Reply:AWS has NONE!But one can record a welders qualification to weld many thousands of weld joints. I know nothing about CWB.
Reply:quite a confusing system, takes time to get a handle on it, all i know is ill have a bunch of TSSA and CWB certs soon enough and will be starting my career off, i know ill have about a dozen certs though(some TSSA some CWB), just cureous how many there are in total

Reply:I don't know any welders that have a dozen certs. I work in an industrial environment and all our welders have 2 to 3 certs, that's it. That's all they require at my place of work. If you do get a job welding at some point, only the certs they require will work for you. They will require rectification at their place of work too for you to work there.Good luck.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

Reply:30 some years of welding and I have 15 or so qualification records. With about half still current.

Reply:The individual codes used in various industries typically allow for the organization to have some flexibility in relation to WHAT type of test they give for performance qualification. Within each code their are ranges of qualification for each variable used during testing. I may test on a horizontal fillet weld with FCAW and per AWS D1.1 I am qualified for FCAW Horizontal Fillet Welds..SAME TEST for another code, and I may be qualified for both FCAW and GMAW.AWS (and API and ASME and AWWA and ANSI etc) provides NUMEROUS codes and specifications for industry. Some may require welder tests to be examined by sppecific methods such as RT or Destructive testing. While Other AWS Codes may allow the manufacturer to just visually look at workmanship samples of the welders work. In both cases, when the piece of paper is signed, a certification exists!Because of the various combinations of variables, a very LARGE number of individual tests can be taken and documented or a VERY small number. When I was in the Navy we had to certify on  Carbon Steel Plate Vertical and OverheadHY 80 Plate Vertical and Overhead1 1/4 Chrome / 1/2 Moly Pipe in the 2g and 5G using a backing ring1 1/4 Chrome / 1/2 Moly Pipe in the 2g and 5G using a consumable insert.1" Sch 80 Carbon Steel using Consumable Insert"       "      304 SS           "                      '"        "     Inconel  "                 "        "     Nickel Copper (Monel)"         "    Copper Nickel 1" Svch 80 Socket Welds in the above materialsVarious Seal Weld configurations used in Nuclear Power Plants (4 or 5 we used)Corrosion Resistant overlay with SS, Inco, Monel, CUNINickel Aluminum Bronze for Prop repair.Steam Generator Tube plugs and DisksGE and DeLaval valve seat repairs (Mock Ups)and Im sure some others . When I got out I went to work for a boiler company. One Carbon Steel tig test qualified me for welding on CS and SS, groove welds and socket welds. So the list can become quite extensive depending upon what an organization is needing.AWS as an organization does NOT certify welders. They do Certify "Accredited Test Facilities" that can provide documentation supporting your qualification tests. AWS also "certifies" welding inspectors, welding engineers, welding salesman, welding supervisors and welding shops. Anyone can "Certify" you in accordance with anything however credibility can come into play. With a standardized method of qualifiying a facility, AWS helps assure that accredited test facilities have the ability to perform testing in accordance with documented procedures.

Reply:They are VERY similar. The metals respond differently but not really "harder". ASME for instance for GTAW allows you to test on CS pipe using CS filler metal to qualify  to weld 300 series stainless. Change to SMAW, you have to use a SS filler metal. But SS SMAW is a bit harder than GTAW.
