way too many amps

I managed to get the microwelder to have a 40v OCV  and makes beautiful beads but ive gotta move the stick really fast to avoid burn through on 1/4" steel and really shove the rod in more than on a store bought.whats the best way to controll the current?   i think a Rheostat Potent​iometer kinda thing would work but i cant find one to deal with 150+ amps.  would it work to place a Rheostat Potent​iometer before the transformers on the primary side?any other ideas im open to themRealgear 140 MIGMore DeWalt tools that I prolly needDIY 160 amp 40 OCV MOT Stick Welder
