Just wondering if anyone has any pictures of a steel shop they have built? Been thinking of building about a 30'x40' building on a foundation using pipe. Anybody out here ever done this? Would like to here and see everybodys ideas. Inside pictures would be nice. I would like to build the building totally from salvage steel, excluding the skin.
Reply:I've thought about it but went the route of pole barn. Went to a rough cut lumber place and saved $400 alone on just the posts.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:I am doing one 35 x 45 in two pieces, but it all I-beams and purlins...no pipes. I believe wroughtnharv has posted a few. Maybe he will chime in later.
Reply:The thing about rough cut wood is you can resell when you tear the barn down.  I've got a garage built out of rough cut redwood.  I should tear it down and build a bigger garage out of something cheap.
Reply:how tall ? I'm in the process of building one right now 30'x40' but used 4" square tubing and 10" I-beams (heavy). I'll gets some pics. and try to post them. What size of pipe are you going to use?
Reply:I was thinking 10' tall. Not sold on pipe. I was just thinking of using pipe because it is readily available at the scrap metal yards in my area. Just started thinking about this and wanted some suggestions before making any plans or buying any materials.
Reply:i made mine out of scrap industreal shelving. its only 20' X 22' X 19' (W,L,H) welded it all to gather with my MM135 every thing but the screws and stain were all recycled and FREE   so it was about $300.00 to build. still working on getting proper power to it but i have some old power boxes with breakers and picked up a bunch of outlets, just gotta wire it up.  i'll dig up a finished shot, i have stares going up the iner back left side making the upstares a great storage area. it was built with box 2"X4" X 12or14 gage. some serface rust here and there but still verry solid. Reply:FWIW; i wpould stay clear of using pipe, it just dose not have the stability of boxed steel. i supose with proper dracing it could work but it would also make fitup a real pain. i did most of my cuts with my plasma cutter (spec125C) but did do some on the chop saw it was just a bit slower. Reply:http://www.weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=6308Here is an older thread that has lots of shop pix.  I like this thread...You might also send a PM to wroughtn_harv.  He has developed a little thingie that helps you assemble pipe-based buildings with a lot less effort.  He is a really good source for this topic.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:I was thinking of using the pipes for my uprights and rafters then using purlins to tie it all together. I was thinking about having steel anchor plates set in my slab then welding the uprights to them.
Reply:i would be concerned about using pipe for the rafters as it realy dose not have good bend resistance, so if you do use it keep that in minde and eather prebend it aginst the roof force or truss it with aditional suport. this would realy be a better place to spring for an I beam or atleast square tubing. something for you to consider. good luck with the build. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.

Reply:b.raven. I built one just as you are talking about.Pipe posts with pipe rafters and perlins on the top and sides to fasten the metal too. I also put steel embeds in the slab and just stood the trusses up and welded them down.Heres a link with a few pics.Feel free o ask any questions..http://www.weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=4684ss

Reply:Steel Shot, that is exactly what I had in mind. Thanks for the post. How big is the shop? What size pipe did you use for the upright pieces attached to the slab? That is a nice looking shop also!
Reply:looks good, the extra suports in the roof was what i was talking about, making a truss out of it will greatly improve the strangth of it. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:the building is 20'x30' with a 10'x20 porch on it.I used 2 7/8" drill pipe for the posts and the truss part is made out of 2 1/2" boiler tube. I havent added the lean to yet but I did put in a 4'x4' vent fan.. i will try to post some recent pictures in the next few days..ss
