So got a project that needs to be galvanized steel. Kind of worried cause I know this is bad stuff as in fumes. Is there a respirator or anything to project from the fumes?
Reply:Have you tried the Search function?  Lots of posts about this.  Not trying to be mean, just short on time this a.m.
Reply:I never had a problem with galvinize in a well ventilated open shop or outside. I would go to 3 M's web site and check out their disposable welding fume respirator. I have use them with no ill effects not only with galvinize but with painted, rusty and oily steel, as well. Have had various company safety officers run tests and they have performed excellently.
Reply:drink a glass of milk before, one halfway, and one at the end of you're day.. it'll keep the flu symptoms down.. again.. i say this.. fumes are harmful ALL the time.. not just welding certain things.. while the fumes from galvanize will get you sick, the fumes from any rod will kill you.. you get into this business with that understanding.. fumes, asbestos, second hand smoke, all of it.. so while masks are nice, you're gonna hafta' be prepaired to wear one 24/7 if you're gonna "avoid" them.. all in all.. a fan on ya' will be fine..if you're not livin on the edge, you're takin up too much room..
Reply:milk , respirators , fans all good advice the company i worked for just did a job 20'' std wall pipe all galv. what we did was remove galv.coating with a z disc or a heavy grit sanding pad these work better than grinding wheel as they do not clog up like grinding wheels
Reply:well yeah.. you gotta clean it.. lol. but holy crap!.. 20" galvanized pipe?!.. am i hearin that correct?!.. what the hell for?!..lol..if you're not livin on the edge, you're takin up too much room..
Reply:it was a fire water main for sunoco oil refinery in south jersey also along with pipe spec. was a 50% x-ray spec. and visiual and pt inspection on all weld o lets, soc o lets, etc. and some o lets were 20'' on 12'' etc. it was a big job
Reply:killer!.. i'm doin 1 1/2" butt-weld pipe for condensate.. with a 7018 for root and cap!.. lol.. you gotta love the 7018 open butt.. and it's in a sump hole.. ugh.. muddy and full of insulation.. got the ol' itchy neck just thinkin about it..if you're not livin on the edge, you're takin up too much room..
Reply:The specific danger of welding/heating galvanized steel is that you inhale zinc oxide.  Milk may help reduce zinc levels in the blood, but I would personally rather not have the stuff in my system in the first place.  Get a 3M respirator with the welding-specific 2091 filter.  It's about twenty bucks and it fits under your helmet.  http://www.amazon.com/3M-Facepiece-R.../dp/B000FTEDMMJack OlsenMy garage website
Reply:whose idea to do that on a condensate line? we used to do olets 7018 open root in field on refinery work. i have found the best way to weld open roots with 7018,ss,inconell,and chrome-moly wire is to switch polarity from dcrp to dc straight polarity  how do you do it.and 1/1/2 pipe it almost would be easier to just heliarc.

Reply:pyroracing85- if you weld galvy outside in good ventilation you should be alright. The respirator pictured above will do the job if you feel the area is enclosed.Weldor/ Certified Inspector
Reply:Don't know the size or scope of your project, could it be sent out for hot dip galvanize post welding and fabrication? Reply:Yeah, probably like most of the rest of you guys I only wear a resperator when I have to.Also all galvanizing SHALL(SHOULD )be removed from the area to be welded, I beleive two inches in etheir direction for D1.1. But it's not a perfect world and grinding galvanizing off is hard work, so most of the time the prep guy does a half azz job and lets the welder fight it.  Especially if your welding out of position it will try to burn through on you.   When I was younger it didnt seem to bother me as much but I swear my tolerance for Galvy has dropped, and now I get rippin headaches and sweats at night after work with seemingly smaller exposures.  So yeah, do yourself a favor and wear a respirator, stay on the prep guys for good prep.2011 Dodge 3500 diesel duallyLincoln SA-200Lincoln SAE-300LN-25'sLincoln Idealarc R3RMiller Trailblazer 302
