Hi, I started out tig a couple weeks ago on a harbor freight machine, then broke down and bought an invertig 201. What a nice machine. Anyway attached are some pics (hopefully) of a bench-top little welding table, a cube I made from 1/8" steel, some beads run on 1/8" steel, and some crappy aluminum beads. This tig stuff is very cool !- JohnOh yeah I wire brushed the steel beads to make them look a little nicer Attached Images

Reply:brings back memories... you've got the basics down..work on your "continuaty" as to say....try running beads 2" long and keep them all the same..lets say you "dip" 16 times on run "a"try to do it over and over useing the same amount of dips...its not as easy as it sounds... after that we'll go on to step whatever ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Thanks for the advice, I'll give that a shot.And believe me, I *know* it isn't as easy as it sounds !I've spent enough time blindly screwing around that I'm probably ready for a specific exercise like you mentioned. Hard to know how to improve otherwise... thanks !- John
Reply:Alum welding can be tricky.Rule #1 Clean your metal #2 clean your tig wire with steel-wool wipe the tig wire with a clean cloth.Use at least 1/8 tungsten you want to put a good sharp tip then ball the tungsten on the ground. It will give you more of a stable arc.If you use argon and don't have enough heat you can get mixed gas argon/helium it will give you more heat at the same amps.If your machine has a cleaning adjustment it helps a great deal.If you weld in the winter months preheat the alum to least 60 degrees. I was one of 4 that passed the x-ray test out of 40 welders to do x-ray welding on alum pipe.9 Years ago a alum welders that can x-ray was getting $30.00 hr and $70.00 a day for food/room.in Ga Good luck |
