I was thinking about picking up a generator for my MM 251, but don't know enough about generators to find out what they may cost.  I also would like to be able to handle a 80 AMP plasma cutter (not both at the same time).  Anybody have a generator they recommend?  Or perhaps a company?
Reply:Wow, for one that big, look to Ingersoll Rand. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:be careful I blew out a circuit board on the 251 at work plugging it into a generator"Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal"   -Henry Ford
Reply:What's the max input requirements for your 251 and plasma ? the tags on the back will give you an indication. The manuals should give more detailed info on maximum needs for each. For instance if the detailed info shows a requirement of, let's say, 40 amps at 230 volts you're looking at a bare minimum of a 10kw. That would be 10kw in the commercial/industrial class. More like 12kw in the big box store class. So you'll have to gather the detailed info on yur machines and go from there."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt

Reply:if you do run it off of a generator it better be a good one with reliable steady CLEAN voltage output, any fluctuations will blow out that solid state board, and it ain't cheap to replace, I'd call Miller on this one, hate to see you do what I did  42 amps at 230v.....     42x230= 9660 watts so a 12kw min if you plan to do this alot 10k for every once in a while"Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal"   -Henry Ford

Reply:With those numbers you're probably going to need an 18- 20kw industrial gen set to run at full power. I know most 10-11kw welding gensets won't run my PM1000 at full power IIRC.When you start talking that size genset, you might be best off looking for a good CC/CV genset welder and a feeder. You're still going to be light on power for the plasma..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear.
