Here are some detailed photos of some welds i did at work before i began welding together some gearbox assemblies.I was using 1.2mm M/S wire, Amps were set on around 150-170, volts were aproximatly 23-27v, gas was corgon 5/2 (Linde gas) I was using the WIA fabricator which we have at work...I was using a slight weave motion in these welds, please give me some pointers on what i can improve on and what i shouldnt be doing.cheershttp://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r...s/PICT0001.jpghttp://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r...s/PICT0002.jpghttp://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r...s/PICT0003.jpghttp://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r...s/PICT0004.jpghttp://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r...s/PICT0005.jpghttp://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r...os/PICT006.jpghttp://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r...s/PICT0007.jpghttp://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r...s/PICT0008.jpg"One World...One Muay Thai...Muay Thai Never Dies..."
Reply:So.....whats the problem?maybe go just a little slower to "back up" the weld..but other than that...whats the problem again? ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:ahah there is no problem, i jus thought id see what other people think about them, jus wanted to know if i was doign n e thing wrong, lol spose i should have retitled it better aye.hey zap, if you want i could do a really nice SIG for you in photoshop CS, i used to make hundreds of them for people a logn long time ago, jus thought i could make sumthing a lil better then the one u currently have, lol.thanks for ya input though"One World...One Muay Thai...Muay Thai Never Dies..."

Reply:No problem looks great, Nice welding ... Washman
Reply:just my 2cents worth abit less wire speed slow down a bit and you don't need to weave a fillet weld with mig to get a good weld the way a weld looks is a personal thing my self I prefer it like this but if you like your welds like the one you showed thats cool thats yourswe all do our welds a way that we know there our ownCreative metal Creative metal Facebook
Reply:I will suggest that you cut hte test piece in several places and look at the root of the weld to be certain that you have sufficient penetration.
Reply:This looks like a machine weld to me.  It is absolutely uniform and consistent. Was this really done by hand?
Reply:I was going to say the same thing - looks like a machine weld. If you're truly weaving, it lays a totally different pattern. Plus, while weaving...especially on a T-but, it's tough to get that uniform of a straight edge or border on the weld. If it's hand welded, I congratulate you on nerves of steel and smooth motion. Reply:Yes i did do these welds, but the metal was alredy one single piece, it wasnt 2 pieces stuck together then welded, as it has a 90 degree joint which i was welding in. and by weave, what i mean is that i start the arc, travel forward a few mm's then go back a few mm's, which gives it that rippled look, and these are 2 seperate welds. one of them looks a little cold to me but i might just be seeing things or sumthing...sorry i didnt give much infor earlier on, i was kinda short for time, had to go to kickboxing training...thanks a lot for the posts guys i really appreciate it.. i will upload some more welds this week and you can have a look at them if you want...cheers guys,Shane"One World...One Muay Thai...Muay Thai Never Dies..."

Reply:Weasy, Too Much Wire Speed. For A Horizontal Flat Weld, Turn Up Voltage To A Spray Transfer. You Will Have A Smooth Bead Appearance Along With High Deposit Rate.
Reply:Wello, your weld was done with a Miller 350P MIG welder, wasn't it?

Reply:The only welder I have seen that can do welds like that is a pulsed-MIG welder.  A very cool process, you set the arc length and wire feed.  The machine does the rest.  The arc length controls penetration and the wire feed controls how fast you feed the weld.  You can dial up the speed way high and it will weld plate as fast as you can move the gun.  Set it way low and you can take your time for welding intricate and odd shapes.
Reply:what about the heat input into the material, i can only guess that if u have it set so that you run a 300mm long fillet in like 20 seconds, you would be putting some heat into that material though wouldnt you? what about distortion? whats the deal with that GMC im just curious as to what it would do to the metal?cheers mate"One World...One Muay Thai...Muay Thai Never Dies..."

Reply:I agree with Ironman that your voltage is a bit low.  Try creeping it up to around 28 volts.  It should smooth out a bit and you might even be able to crank your wire feed even higher.  Nice ripples.  I also like a bit of a whip on my production welding.  I find it creates an egg shaped puddle that is more controllable at heavy rates and the forward motion burns into the corner each time.  I have trouble holding the gun exactly in the correct position when doing production welding.  It is so easy to get undercut or overlap if you are a bit off.  Whipping blends everything.
Reply:just be careful with holes like this, from my experience, this is where most welds develop a crack. but.... i gotta say youre much better at it than me. Attached Images
Reply:hey lawn co, yea i know exactly what you mean, but i went out and had a look at the welds again, and it is jus a bit of that silicon coating on the top of the weld. Because after the photos were taken i was like "i dont remember there being a hole in the weld", but i have seen that problem arise heaps, where sometimes i will be welding on square lugs, and when i start at on corner and proceed to weld to the next, when i get to the end, a hole appears right at the end, so i usuaully have to hold the trigger in for a period of a few seconds to let it build up, but sometimes this does not work and the hole still appears. Is there a way of stopping this?"One World...One Muay Thai...Muay Thai Never Dies..."
Reply:You can back up a little bit at the end of you welds, so if a crater does appear and start to "crater crack" at least there is a sound weld underneath it.
Reply:Aww hell, if these welds need critiqued I need a slap in the mouth.....  Nice welds, need someone to kick around?Chuck

Reply:here are some of mine. Manual with a Hobart beta-mig 250. Using 95/5 gas. You can have automated looking welds if you are good at it.very nice.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
