Looking at getting an extra tank for my Mig so I can play with Aluminum.  Being I am just the average hobbyist, is a tank as small as a 20 cu worth getting, or should I step up to the 40 cu?Millermatic 252"Don't worry, he's got a welder, he can fix anything"
Reply:All depends. 20cf will get you maybe 1 hr of weld time. I almost never use my spool gun on alum for any real time length, so it would  probably do fine for me. I'd probably still go up to a 40 though unless the 20 was super cheap. Usually I'm just doing a few small repairs and weld time is less than 15 minutes or so at best. I do have a small bottle of 100% argon that I got to do mig. I've never had to refill it more than once or twice. I do have a 125cf of argon however, that I will use if I know I need to use a lot, since it's cheaper to fill than the baby bottle. One thing to keep in mind is that most places are willing to upgrade in the future, usually for just the difference in cost between the 2 tank sizes. So you can always decide later to get a bigger cylinder..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:You will be using 35-45 cu.ft. per hour for aluminum MIG.
Reply:Thanks guys, that gives me the perspective I was looking for.Millermatic 252"Don't worry, he's got a welder, he can fix anything"
