A few months ago I started working on this XS650 project.  I've been really lazy about finishing it and so it sits.  Just bought myself a new welder today, and wired up the garage to 220.  Sure would love to get this baby done! Attached Images
Reply:yeah! get that thing done and post more pics!! wanna see what/how you do, and how it looks finished
Reply:cool project  keep the pic's coming Creative metal Creative metal Facebook
Reply:agreed, I have parts in the shed. I need some inspiration.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools
Reply:Sweet! I'm in the middle of stretching/dropping my Zuki '82 GS650. I'll try and get good pix up here one of these days. I decided against making mine a hardtail though which turned out to be a huge pain in the a$$. Instead of the twin shock setup, I went with a monoshock beneath the seat. It's a shaft drive so I stretched that and the swingarm 4.5" and dropped the whole rear about 5 inches. I'm very interested to see how yours comes along! keep posting pix.  -Avi
Reply:hey, climber, i am curious about the details (welder used, steel used etc.)thx
Reply:nice job,,keep us informed and the pics coming.Theres no such thing as scrap metal, its all good.
Reply:if you need inspiration, just watch some biker build off!
Reply:nice lines on the frame design. i know this has probably been asked, but won't you be inducing to much stress on the neck. currently the node is on the bottom 3rd of the neck. shouldn't the downtube and backbone have some degree of seperation, or are you adding a brace from the top of the neck to backbone?
Reply:Thanks everyone.  This has been a huge undertaking for me.  I started off with a Miller 135 for tacking and a few of the structural welds (.120/.188 wall DOM).  Most of the thicker parts were done by a friend of mine with a  bigger machine.  The neck are is not finished.  It still needs another piece of tubing from the top of the steerer tube to the backbone.  I have a ton of stuff left to do.Lately I have been doing other projects (house, car, etc..) and have put this frame and motor up for sale locally.  In the meantime I have begun to design a Girder front end, and plan to start that this winter if it doesn't sell.  I've got a new welder coming soon so I can get back to work!
Reply:Nice project Climber.  Gotta love that XS motor.  That bike has picked up quite a following over the years.  I had one in high school ('76).  I have a picture here somewhere. Is what you've done so far scratch built? Did that frame start life as a different bike? - Jim
Reply:I started with an idea.  Built a tubing bender, bought some steel, and went to town.  Here is a photo of my inspiration.  This guy builds some of the coolest motorcycles ever dreamt of,  Fred "Krugger" Bertrand.  His website: www.krugger.net Attached Images

Reply:I used to dragrace a X1B 650 Yamaha in the late 80's. 7.20's @ 98mph in the 1/8th. Can't wait to see it finished.
Reply:'comon..lets go now..get off your a$$ and move it!...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Speed unfortunately is something I don't have.   I just got my first Tig yesterday and laid down a few beads.  I have a long way to go for sure before I even touch my frame again.  Maybe a few months of practice over the winter, the we'll see.  Until then.....
Reply:what TIG unit did you get?? its probly a good idea to practice for a wile befor jumping into bike parts, TIG takes a bit of practice befor you even get close to good strong beads. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:Miller Maxstar140sth.  Thumb control is funky but works great.  So far I am really enjoying it.  I don't plan on doing anything for my frame for quite some time (read -summer).  Until I can make a joint look good, strong, and reliable I am not even going to go near my bike parts.  Oh, and the frame got chopped last weekend!  It is going to be something I have wanted to do for quite some time.  Much less fab work than the racer idea.  Stay tuned....
Reply:That Belgian fellow Krugger sure knows cool.Ever see the CADbike site Climber?  www.dbbp.comCAD custom renderings in the galleries: http://216.118.118.21/dbbp/cadbikes/cadbikes.htmlBut he builds some of them too.  Check out this BMW Airhead - CADbike #33.A 42 part build gallery here: http://216.118.118.21/dbbp/tech-tips/bmw/bmw.html - Jim
Reply:Yup.I have been a die hard DBBP fan for ever.  Mark occassionally pokes his nose in over at Chopperweb where I frequent.  His site has been really inspirational to me.  I actually decided to change direction with this project.  Amidst financial issues, and parts on hand, I decided to go the 70's chopper look.  started fabbing a new rear end this weekend.Scott Attached Images
Reply:no loose pant legs around that clutch basket!!!!!    ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:No way~!  Mid controls only for me anyhow. S
Reply:With all the telavized bike builds I am guessing welders who watch are wondering if they could take on the task and create an art form that is functional. You truly have the abilaty.I am guessing you have had offers to buy.I think I am going to  scrap out my new honda valkyrie and make something more to my own liking.Brb with pictures I am going to get the thing chopped into pieces and I will post after done.Check this thread in about 5 years and see what I came up with.Awsome job you are my inspiration!!!
Reply:SOOO Cool!!  I love the look of these bikes!!  I just sold my Buell XB9 and I seriously think that the next bike I own will either be an old vintage honda, or something custom built like this.  This bike has some seriously cool potential!
Reply:I'm liking the DBBP stuff, very skilled work!John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.comthinking about a prism tank to go with this new idea.  Whatcha think? Attached Images
