Grades of stainless steel. How many? I just bought a stainless steel outside wood stove. I noticed the welding, some were rusty and some were clean. So I took a magnet to check the inside of the stove. It did stick to some parts that look like stainless. I put it to the water pipes over the fire box and it did not stick. I'm thinking they have two different grades of stainless in the construction. The main fire box looks like it is galvenized coating but I would think that would not last long in a wood stove. The magnet sticks to this part. It must be a lower grade of stainless, right?
Reply:The grade for the higher heat will rust. Reply:Even 304 will become magnetic if work harden. It is quite likely that the rusty looking stainless is 409, which will work quite nicely, is magnetic but will not be shiney. It is a common stainless alloy for auto exhausts also.
