Had a small "bend it" job today..Ever had to bend something only to have the bend end come out too short after bending? Here's what we do..On this particular job i needed 1" after the bend (30 degrees) for the next piece to get welded to..if you just space it out one inch and bend it it will be short by 1/8"..so just lengthen the piece by 1/8"..(rule of thumb..up to a 45 degree bend add 1/8" over 45 degrees add 1/4")clamp to table...heat and bend downyou want 30 degrees you get 30 degrees..see? kept at one inch..get the spacers out and "get it in the middle"..(note the key had to face up in the print)tack and weld..and thats that..had 2 to do..both are identical ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:That looks like 29.5 degrees from where i'm sitting.  Good work zap, thanks for sharing the "rules of the thumb". I keep 'em tucked away when doing similar work.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com

Reply:Originally Posted by zapsteri should reiterate...anything under 3/16" should be just a little over the size you want..3/16 to 3/8"..add the 1/8"over 3/8 to 5/8 add 3/8"sorta like a graph..as the thickness increases so does the spacing..you'll get it.....zap!
Reply:Originally Posted by mla2ofusJust so I get this right,Zap. You said for anything over 45* to double the extra amount,so for 3/8"-5/8" you add 3/4" for any angle over 45*. Not trying to split hairs, just want to get the rule right for future use. It's a good one to remember.                        Mike
