Here's a neat thing about tig, the really fine control you have.A useless project to be sure: Attached Images
Reply:Thats really neat, its amazing that you can have such control. What kind of welder are you using? How is it working for you?
Reply:It's a tig welder, more info in my response to your post about my aluminum beads.I looked at some of your other posts and see you are 14 and don't have a welder (Yet, of course!). I'm an old fart of 43 which probably sounds ancient to you, but watch out, blink your eyes and you'll be here too!! The good thing is you still feel 14 in your head when your 43 on the outside.Anyway any thoughts or prospects on getting a welder? At least you are getting an early start. when I was 14 we didn't have the internet, or pc's for that matter. How did we learn anything back then???- John
Reply:What kind of rod do you use to weld quarters ? While I'm on that subject, is there any ill effect to use stainless rod to weld mild steel ? Just wondering? Not a beginner, not a pro !
Reply:Hey runchman:Nice job.....I wonder what one of those would do to an automatic toll both machine?.....Patrick
Reply:I didn't use any rod, just fused together the existing metal. Does a serious tarnish job on the quarters though.

Reply:Something else that fun to do is weld razor blades together but you have to weld blade to blade in a triangular shape. Its not that hard to do if you fuse weld them together.Strive For Perfection

Reply:Your right! When I went to the Richard Petty museum in NC, near my bro, they have the same penny destruction/creation machine. Hmmm....John - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:It is not illegal. Please see link. It says, in part... "Whoever fraudulently alters, defaces, mutilates, impairs, diminishes, falsifies, scales, or lightens any of the coins coined at the mints of the United States" Key word here is "fraudulently".

Come on Zap, how about a can? If ya can do it I'll try again and yall can laugh at my results
Reply:Not to quibble but those don't look like razor blades to me, but rather knife blades for a stanley-type carpenter knife. i.e. a mile thick compared to a real razor blade Please tell us it isn't so, oh zen-master ....- JohnOriginally Posted by runchmanNot to quibble but those don't look like razor blades to me, but rather knife blades for a stanley-type carpenter knife. i.e. a mile thick compared to a real razor blade Please tell us it isn't so, oh zen-master ....- John

Defacing by itself is another. However, I am not absolutely sure if coins are considered part of the "issuance" of the federal reserve. If it is, damaging them, even without intent to commit fraud "may" be a federal crime. Remember the Secret Service holds jurisdiction over crimes involving the currency.http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/caseco...rs/17/toc.htmlThis is each of the sections under the criminal code involving federal currencies. I would not want to be close to committing a federal crime. I realize this is pretty trivial (two quarters), but you never know what someone with a badge might fixate on.
Reply:I see. That's a very good point and I believe you're right. However, I would not want to be splitting hairs with a Secret Service agent when I am trying to explain that I can damage a $1 coin, but not a $1 federal reserve note or dollar bill. But, based on that differentiation, I think you are right, but then again...(disclaimer) I am not a lawyer nor do I play one on TV. Anyway, if they come looking for a guy that tack-welds two quarters together, I'M PROBABLY ALREADY IN TROUBLE!!!Last edited by smithboy; 01-05-2007 at 07:16 AM.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.

Reply:if its ok for him to weld 2 quarters togather, dose that mean it would be ok for me to do 50 pennies? how about 5000 of them ? if i call it art when its done dose it still count as defacing or is it now improving??we have one of them pennie smashers at the zoo here also, so if i smash them in a state run zoo befor welding them dose that make it ok cuzz the state authorized the smash, making it no longer leagal tender??? summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
