Just as it says. My local supplier recently switched from a $20 min cut charge to a $35 min. Not per cut but the more you need cut the more they charge.Just curious as to what they charge around the country. I am starting to see the reason behind ordering full sticks at a time.Come try it out and stay a while.
Reply:Around here Pacific steel charges about 10.00 and rocky mount steel 5.00 thats for the hot saw or shear, the motor plasma or track torch 45.00 to 50.00 thats one hour minimumDo not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.
Reply:My supplier will cut to length for free.  If you need 10 ft. you pay for 10 ft, and they cut that off a stick, and toss it in your truck.  I have bought down to 2 ft. before, paying just the for the 2 ft.  Any other work is their labor charge of 60 bucks an hour, broke into 15 minute increments.  Of course, they have just about everything, press brake, shears, bandsaws, plasma, welding etc, etc.Who is John Galt?
Reply:Twin City Metals in Kennewick, Washington will sell to you by the foot, give you a price break if you take your smaller pieces from the 'Rem' pile and cut to length for free. They have the best prices in the area.UA Local 598
Reply:I think I am getting ripped off personally. If I want 8 feet of 2" X 2" X 3/16" structural steal, Another $35 gets me to 15 feet.  At that point I may as well work on getting a full 20 foot stick.Come try it out and stay a while.
Reply:Here in San Diego there are basically two sources for new steel. Industrial Metals charges various amounts for cuts depending on the weather or ??? California Metals will cut any length of material I want for free and if I buy a sheet they will shear it into whatever blanks I want no matter how many cuts, also free. Reply:Nada, Zippo, Zilch, nyetBuy the steel from the dude, and cuts are free for shapes.Buy the sheet metal from the dude, and the shear is free if it takes relatively little time to do the cuts.Small quanitiy pricing, no minumum size on shapes.  Over 100 lineal feet pricing on larger orders.  But all are cut for free.I refuse to trade with anyone else, unless I need bends, or plasma work.  Then it's Stillwater Steel...........excellent people there too.In my area there are, I believe, around 4 independant retail steel suppliers.  They don't walk away if you don't buy semi loads around here.  They want your business"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Fazzio's / Steel and Metal Liquidators in Delaware charges $1.00 per cut. Not sure about he NJ location. Not terrible, but not free! Notching / punching or anything else on the Geka ironworker is a $5.00 set up fee plus $1.00 per "action". Various charges for other work on the shear / shotblast machine, roller etc.Just another clown trying to be cool
Reply:Dencol in Denver charges me $1.50 a cut, and will sell me 2 feet if that is what I want.  I might pay a little more per pound for less than stick quantities.   Sometimes I buy a 20 foot stick and pay them the $1.50 extra to cut it into two 10 feet pieces to be easier to handle.  If I am buying small stuff, like 1/4 inch dia rod, I save the $1.50 by buying a full stick and then using my hacksaw to cut it   (The chips end up next to their building, not in the parking lot where they might end up in somebody's tire).Their competitor, literally across the street, will not sell less than a full stick.   Not sure what they charge per cut.I guess that I am fortunate to have a local supplier who is accommodating to small orders.RichardSculptures in copper and other metalshttp://www.fergusonsculpture.comSyncrowave 200 Millermatic 211Readywelder spoolgunHypertherm 600 plasma cutterThermal Arc GMS300 Victor OA torchHomemade Blacksmith propane forge
Reply:My favorite place here generally doesn't charge anything. I've never paid for a cut yet. I do see them charge tho. A guy comes in bichen about the high price of steel and wants 2 feet cut, he's gonna pay up the arse for the cut, I can guarantee. Seen it several times. Ask them to cut a sheet down to 2'x2' when they have a 2'x3' in the scrap rack,,,,, you'll pay for the whole thing one way or the other.  Guy behind the counter has a grin the whole time."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:To just cut a full length stick in half, etc. the one cut is free. To cut off a half, etc. and just buy that, it costs you $5-15 depending on the size of the stuff. For cutting the hard stuff, ie SS or beam materials, you are paying as much as $40 a cut.And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:alaska steel wants $35 for a cut, doesn't matter if i am buying a whole stick and need to cut it in half to get it home.Dynasty 200DXPassport plus w/ spoolmate 100victor 315c oxy/(act and prop)Miller digital elitemilwaukee power tools
Reply:I think a lot of the cut charges are related to how much steel you buy and how much a pound you pay for it, the guys that are cutting for free I would guess are charging more per pound to make up the difference. when I buy a load of 6" .250 wall pipe from the pipe wholesaler, last load, I paid about 8.00 a foot if I go to the local steel yard its up aroud 12.00 a foot for a 20' stick, so man hours and remnants have to be made for some howDo not argue with an idiot. Reply:Originally Posted by ggarnerThats good info to know!  Not sure where in SD you are, but Escondido metal supply has new and remnant stuff.  Cuts depend on what you buy, iirc its $3 the 1st cut and $1 for additional cuts on standard stuff like tubing, rounds etc.  My friend bought a piece of 12" structural I beam there and had it cut and i think the charged him $20-30 for the cut. But they did have to bring it in from the yard on a forklift and get it in the bandsaw etc and he said it was 1/2 an hour in actual cutting time. On all the remnant stuff i think its 20c  a lb for steel and slightly more for glavi or other stuff (i think if i remember the price correctly).
Reply:Originally Posted by Jim StabeIt has been years since they sold the surplus steel for $0.20/lb, it is closer to $0.50/lb now.
Reply:yup it usually pays to buy full sticks and plate, unless you won't ever use them, don't know a cost per cut never had em do it.... I probably would of been better off a few times as it can sure eat up some cut wheels...then I got my plasma and still lot of prep time to make an edge look square sheared I just make things harder on myself than need to be though I suppose Good luck with your suppliers.Lincoln 225 Tombstone,Miller Big 20,Hobart 180,150' Argon,A/D hobart hood 22 Ton Log splitter,79 F350 dump eats 4.75 TONS and still turns cutters, grinders,And a  Hypertherm POWERMAX 30
Reply:I never tried to get them to cut anything to shape or exact length. I do not buy HUGE stuff but mostly full sticks or full sheets. They will cut the lengths in half for free. Never asked them to cut sheet but I do not see the tools so any cuts would be torch cuts I would guess.
Reply:My local supplier in michigan would throw in a cut for free if you bought a minimum order (like $50 or something) and after that it was only about $1 a cut  I would often buy a full stick and have them cut 2-3 times for about a buck.$35 to power up a drop saw or a horizontal band saw seems like high way robbery. Only take the guy a minute to make the cut
Reply:When buying angle, square, round or flat stock bring a torch and cut it myself in the yard if a battery operated recip saw won't do the trick
Reply:We don't get charged for cuts unless it's more than 10 or so.  If I'm getting that much at that point it's cheaper to rent a truck or trailer and take them in full lengths.  There is a single piece minimum though.  If you only need part of the stick or sheet, you still have to pay for the entire piece.  I always get full pieces and have them cut in half to get them home.
Reply:Local place here called Bay Area Metal Works. I buy all my steel from them I am just a hobby person though. I call ahead of time and make sure they aren't busy. Last thing I bought was some 3x3x1/4 angle cut at 44"x 2 and 22"x2  and a piece of expanded metal that was there. I was charged 50$ for the steel and 2 guys did the cutting. This was the first time I had him "cut" something to size. Normally when I go there he normally points at the first person he sees and tells them to help me find what I need. Not sure If I get decent prices or not but I paid 40$ for about 10 16" x 18" x 1/2" square cut offs from a job.

I would say you need to go to another steel supplier.
Reply:At the place I go to I always have to get a 20' rod, tube or angle cut into 3 pieces essentially (I'm more a hobby welder hauling stuff in my wife's SUV).  They just fire up the chop saw for that and don't charge me.For my welding table I had a 4'x4' piece of 1/4" plate on their drop pile cut in half and that was a $10 minimum to fire up the shear.
Reply:3 of my local suppliers cut for free if it's just a couple cuts.  One charges $4 per cut for anything that can be cut with the chop saw or torch.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:My supplier charges nothing for cuts.  I've got to him before and said "I need 8 pieces of 2x2 square tubing, each 14 inches long" and it's not a problem.  Service with a smile and that's why I keep going back there, despite all the other suppliers around here.    Keeping the customers happy- He's either a super-nice guy or a shrewd businessman.  Lincoln AC225 & MigPak 140, Lincoln Magnum SpoolGun, Miller Spectrum 375-X Plasma, Syncrowave 200 TIG, Millermatic 252 MIG, Miller Digital Elite, General 7x12" horiz/vert bandsaw, 3' box/pan brake, 20 ton press, milling machine, 12x28 lathe, etc.
