Ahhh Yes......Castings... Customer came in this A.M. with this..Goes to a Bobcat i believe..After the acetone bath..we prep the ends..Dont go beveling it "all the way"..You have to leave some of the broken part "as is" so you can line it back up again..9 times out of 10 they will go back together perfectly..Time for the clamp...Well...dont you know it!...Contamination right away!..this is gonna be a challenge...Ok stop and clean again..Contaminate..stop and clean again..and again and again... Eventually it will go away...next post.....zap!Last edited by zapster; 01-16-2007 at 04:02 PM.I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:So after 3 trips to the belt sander we were finally getting some results..one last pass and in the lathe for finishing..Not to bad!Never give up..dont let "it" win.. keep after it and you will win!I get all the fun jobs... ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Ugh, how many hours labor? Seems like it would be easier for them to just buy a new part, unless they aren't readily available. I get all the cheap customers like that, then they complain when they have to pay you for labor. John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com

Reply:True...true. In construction or any other work, down time isn't a money maker.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:Awwww, zap, in 45 minutes you probably could have turned a whole new filter housing out of raw stock.Or maybe done a gasket-plate and the threaded cross-drilled center post and then welded -those- two pieces together.  Well, maybe it would have taken you 60 minutes or so.  LOL.Nice work as usual. You -like- acetone, don't you?   Maybe an ultrasonic cleaner using acetone as the fluid will cut down on the re-cleaning time.Last edited by MoonRise; 01-16-2007 at 05:59 PM.

Reply:I always got a kick out of folks saying, "Why would you pay 5 times what the part cost to fix?" I answered one time with authority....."Well because the line looses about $820,000 Every day this machine is down" This was in the semiconductor industry. we mad all the chips that go in those fancy jumpdrives. Funny how putting a dollar figure on the LOSS makes them realize that 200-300 dollars to get a machine working again really isn't a big deal.Grant
Reply:Exactly!I used to make parts in C.N.C. Bridgeports...Spit stuff out.."one offs"..hold it in my hand after and say "They're gonna pay what? for this??"But when a very hi dollar machine is down..time is everything.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I did a crack in a motorcycle crankcase a while back.  I had exactly the same problems with contamination.  I laid a pass with filler, cleaned, and then passed over it a few times with the torch but no filler.  This seemed to float the contaminants to the surface and I eventually got a weld with acceptable porosity.
